ej's kung-fu capsule review for films of the chop-socky old-school - 1. basic plot type - fighting the Japanese; damsel in distress; Bruce lee imitator.

    2. plot construction - poor.

    3. dramatic - tries hard and fails.

    4. funny - unintentionally, especially the opening sequence.

    5. dialog - miserably cliché.

    6. cast performance - over-the-top histrionics.

    7. crew performance - competent at best.

    8. amount of fighting - lots.

    9. quality of fighting - very intense; over-use of fast-motion and slow-motion techniques.

    10. special any cast or crew notes - Korean; has the bigger Korean stars of the genre 11. big positive - entertaining most of the time.

    12. big negative - very violent, even for this genre; 2 or 3 sequences are very disturbing.

bottom-line - who should see this movie - genre completist; too violent and too silly for a general audience.

FOUR INFERNOS TO CROSS is a typical South Korean kung fu movie, heavily indebted to the kind of pictures that were doing the rounds in cinemas in Hong Kong and Taiwan during the era. Once again we're in a world in which temples are attacked, roaming soldiers traverse the world seeking combat, and good will always vanquish evil. Truth be told, if you're looking for more nuance than that then you're unlikely to find it here, because this film exists only in a poor quality version, badly dubbed and with a picture so blurry it's difficult to pick out the detail. Godfrey Ho picked it up for release via IFD. The fight scenes are plentiful but undistinguished, and even kung fu addicts are unlikely to find much to crow about here.
  • When i bought this movie i did not know what to expect. I did not know any of the cast members. After seeing this movie I really liked this flick. Kyehee Kim is an very skilled martial artist. The fights were really great. The action director did a great job. The plot is interesting too. Only this is a korean movie and it is very nationalistic. This movie is also a korean vs japan movie. Why are Japanese always the bad guys? Kyehee Kim is an excellent Bruce Lee clone. He looks like him and can really kick ass. He is much better then Bruce Li, Bruce Le, Bruce Thai, Bruce Lai, Bruce Lei, Dragon Lee, Kim tai-chong etc etc. If you see this movie don't hesitate but buy it. You won't regret it.
