To See or Not to See (1969)

Plot

To See or Not to See

Edit

Summaries

  • A scientist develops an unusual pair of eyeglasses which allows the wearer's mind to see things objectively rather than the usual subjective manner.
  • Man's inner-self lives in a state of perpetual fear as a defense mechanism against the scary things in life. However, fear is subjective and that defense mechanism may be obscuring that which should not be feared. Thus, a scientist develops a pair of spectacles that changes the wearer's perspective and allows them to overcome their worst fears.—pr1mal_1
  • In this short film, Czech filmmaker Bretislav Pojar amusingly reflects on our habit of looking before we leap. What he shows us is the little person inside each of us, the cautious character we all know, who acts to keep us out of trouble but also in a state of defeat. Is there a cure for this reluctance to face up to life in the raw? The film shows there is. With the Pojar charm at work, your worst fears suddenly look plain silly.—Anonymous

Synopsis

  • A scientist starts explaining his theory about the development of the human soul, depicted as a small ghost which lives within the human body. His narrative begins with the development of an average male human, and its reaction to negative experiences.

A young boy is depicted, fantasizing about being a Native American. He enters a Tipi in his imaginative world, while in the real world he is entering a doghouse. He is attacked by the dog within the doghouse, and is forced to flee. Shortly after, the boy fantasizes about being a football player, and being about to kick a winning goal. He actually shoots a makeshift ball through a glass window. A large, angry adult exits his house, captures the boy, and spanks him. The boy has had two traumatic experiences within the same day.

The narrative moves forward in time, with the unnamed boy having passed puberty. He fantasizes about being a motorcycle driver participating in a race, and in the real world he is actually speeding up on a bicycle. A police officer grabs him, while the bicycle gets wrecked. The officer arrests him for reckless driving and places the boy in a police wagon. The boy has suffered another traumatic experience.

The narrative again moves forward in time. The boy has become a young adult, and has a boring job as an office worker. The man fantasizes about a pretty female co-worker, then fantasizes about becoming Tarzan, then spends his time fantasizing about multiple naked woman. His boss notices that he is not working, yells at him, fires him, and kicks him out of his office.

The now unemployed man daydreams while walking away. A careless driver fails to notice him, and the man is hit by the driver's car. He is briefly unconscious, then wakes up to find himself surrounded by a crowd. They are arguing about who was to blame for the accident. The man has had two traumatic experiences in the same day.

The narrative moves forward in time again. The man is now a mature adult, working at another office. But the traumatic experiences of the past still haunt him, and he is actually a nervous wreck. He is terrified of dogs, of large men, of police officers, of his supervisors at work, and of automobiles. He suffers from neurosis, and self-medicates by mixing sedatives and whiskey. He soon needs professional help.

The film returns to the scientist, who explains that this is what happens to most modern adults. But the scientist has created a pair of glasses which would allow the man to view his reality in a more objective way. In the scientist's narrative, the man starts seeing minimal extensive threats and starts behaving more aggressively. His fearless attitude causes others to fear him, and his life is improved.

The scientist then tests his theory by actually giving the glasses to the man of the narrative. The neurotic man suddenly sees himself as a giant surrounded by dwarfs, and behaves accordingly. He ignores a number of real or perceived dangers, and acts with aggression. But he ignores the real danger of a stream-roller on his path. He is killed by the steamroller, and the owner of a funeral parlor struggles to fit the "giant" in a small coffin.

The doctor still believes that his invention may be beneficial. A person conversing with him starts wearing the glasses, feels like a giant, and steps on the seemingly smaller doctor. Then a series of glasses-wearing men (who are progressively larger giants) proceed to step on each other. The film ends.
