I tried to work out who this film was aimed at. The best answer I could come up with was - rather naive teenage Japanese girls. The devotion of the upper class young lad to his servant-class girlfriend is quite something. That the couple run away, with the disapproval of both sets of parents, and live together for a year without marrying around the time of the second world war, is unusual as well.

This film is quite gently paced, and it mostly about the relationship between the two young people and their student friends. I found it all rather dull and it only just held my interest. The last third of the film is quite unusual, as it involves the young man keeping a promise to his girl in a rather extreme manner.
