How you take this film will probably depend on your views on religion and, in particular, Christianity. Taking the Jesus fish symbol as its title and the logo of the restaurant, this short sees a man tired and working to row across the sea. He reaches a restaurant and orders the fish and the waiter tells him to wait as he heads off to try to catch him one. While he waits (and waits) the man contemplates the other fish on offer and some strange things occur.
For the most part this film is very strange but well animated; a man loses a piece of himself by trying to eat a fish with his own face instead of waiting for the one he asked for. He sees himself as a machine broken down into pieces and other such images and to watch it for the first time is very weird because the images and delivery is quite unsettling in what it shows. The conclusion brings one to the full understanding that the film is about religion and how you take it on your second viewing is influenced by how you feel about religion. To me the film is about the faith of patience and waiting and this is shown in the ultimate prize of being persistently true rather than impatient. The religious imagery throughout make this pretty clear and as such it is at least a creative and interesting way to deliver such a message.
The content didn't really hold me though, even if it did take on more meaning on a repeat viewing; what worked for me was the animation. The stop-motion characters move very smoothly and the mix of the ordinary and the creepy works very well to create an atmosphere that engaged me even if I wasn't sure where it was going. It is ultimately a rather simple religious message but this is at least a refreshingly different way for such a piece to be delivered.
