Netflix To Reboot 'Star Search,' The Classic Ed McMahon Talent Show
Image
Some of the world's biggest stars got their start on talent competition shows. Before there was American Idol, So You Think You Can Dance, or even Showtime at the Apollo, contestants made their way to Star Search with hopes of winning and making it big. Ed McMahon hosted the original Star Search from 1983 to 1995, seeing a young Beyoncé, Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake and more sing their hearts out on stage. There were also up-and-coming comedians, dancers, groups and more who made it their mission to sway the judges. Now Netflix wants to recreate the impact of the competition series with a live reboot on its streaming service.

According to Deadline, the new version will be produced by Jesse Collins Entertainment, a full-service film and television production company with experience working on competition-based shows. In fact, the company already has one on Netflix, Rhythm + Flow, a hip-hop contest where aspiring rappers compete in battles,...

Image
American Idol has been a cornerstone of American television since its launch in 2002. The reality singing competition has helped several talented musicians fulfill their dreams.

With its run spanning over two decades, American Idol has featured some of the most high-profile people in the music industry as its judges. The show initially ran on Fox from 2002 to 2016. And after a two-year hiatus, it resumed on ABC.

After reviving the show, ABC introduced a new panel of judges, each bringing their star power and musical expertise. This revamp put Katy Perry, Lionel Richie, and Luke Bryan in charge of picking the best contestants. ABC pays quite a lump sum to all its judges, a trend that continues even as Perry departs from the show.

Even when Fox was airing the show, it was not an uncommon occurrence for...

Podtalk: Actor Romina D’Ugo of ‘Portal to Hell’ at Slamdance
Image
Chicago – Encountering Romina D’Ugo at the recent Slamdance Film Festival was the closest thing to destiny I’ll ever come across. After I reviewed “I Like Movies,” in which Romina had a significant supporting role, and then doing a podcast on the film, she serendipitously appeared at Slamdance, representing for her latest role in “Portal to Hell.”

The story in the new film regards Dunn (Trey Holland), who is a debt collector. His life of routine is interrupted when a “Portal to Hell” appears in his local laundromat, guarded by the manager named Ed (Romina D’Ugo). Chip the Demon (Richard Kind) emerges to explain that his devilish tasks include dragging to hell Dunn’s neighbor, Mr. Bobshank (Keith David). A deal is offered - three souls to save Bobshank. At first Dunn says no. but when one of his debtors follows him to the laundromat and well… once you do one,...

Stephen ‘tWitch’ Boss’ Family Accuses Widow Allison Holker of ‘Cherry-Picking’ From His Journals
Image
In the wake of Allison Holker promoting her book “This Far,” her relationship with the family of her late husband Stephen “tWitch” Boss has become “strained.” Boss’ mother and younger brother spoke to “CBS Mornings” host Gayle King about what it was like to discover the private moments of their loved one’s suicide through a People magazine cover story.

When asked if they would have any interest in reading the late performer’s journals, mom Connie Boss Alexander said she thinks so, “Just to feel closer to him, ’cause these are his thoughts.”

Boss’ brother Dre Rose concurred, but for a slightly different reason. “I would love to see all of the journals in entirety. I think those journals will tell you a lot. I think there’s things in those journals that are good and bad,” he said, emphasizing that Boss likely wrote about his personal and marital life in those journals.

The Golden Globes Reclaims Its Chaotic Glory With a Vibrant Nikki Glaser and Some Fun Facts: TV Review
Image
After a year of actual normalcy (one without strikes or a pandemic), Hollywood is back to its regularly scheduled programming, which includes a fun and frenzied Golden Globes. The enjoyable but unserious cousin of the awards shows has finally found its stride, post-Hollywood Foreign Press Association scandals. Following an absolute dud of a ceremony last January, the Golden Globes righted its wrongs by offering nominees and viewers something both wholly different and beautifully familiar.

Comedian Nikki Glaser, the first solo female host in the show’s history, dived right in with a strong and quippy opening monologue. The ex-“FBoy Island” host covered a wide range of topics, including the 2024 Presidential election results and the #MeToo movement, and was vibrant and zingy from the moment she opened her mouth. Glaser quickly pressed on everything from Timothée Chalamet’s sparse mustache to “Wicked” stars Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo’s viral holding space interview.

Sony Pictures Television’s Eli Holzman Wants Less Reliance On Recommissions: “We Neglect New Ideas At Our Peril”
Image
The unscripted market might be beginning to settle after a chaotic few years, but the over-reliance on recommissions needs to end, says Sony Pictures Television Nonfiction boss Eli Holzman.

“We as an industry neglect new ideas at our peril,” said Spt Nonfiction’s President speaking at Content London in the UK. “Every big hit we love today was once a risk for someone. It was a gamble and you have to do that.”

Holzman said the Spt’s biggest hits such as Shark Tank and 90 Day Fiancé were being renewed “at a clip,” but that the same appetite didn’t exist for new shows. He broke down how the trend could impact Sony’s unscripted business model, using an example of when Spt was a “100-series” business (it’s slightly less these days).

“If you looked at those 100 series, 50 were season ones and we didn’t expect most of those to come back.
