Summaries

  • Flo and Alice struggle with Vera and her sleeping pills.

Synopsis

  • It was a dark and stormy night. So stormy that the lone customer in Mel's Diner was Calvin. Mel decides to close early, dons his raincoat, and leaves.

Vera is agitated because Calvin has been making advances toward her. Both Flo and Alice tell her not to fight it, to let him catch her.

The phone rings. It's Calvin calling Vera. Even more upset than before, Vera disappears into the coat room. Flo and Alice are ready to go in their rain gear and call for Vera to come out. They find her just as she has downed a full vial of sleeping pills.

When questioned about why she swallowed the pills, Vera reveals that Calvin asked her to marry him. When she declined, he said he was going to shoot himself in despair. Now Vera feels like she is a killer.

Alice and Flo are somewhat panicked over what to do. Alice tries to call Vera's doctor. He's out of town. So, they call the fire department to send an ambulance. Then the phone goes dead. The rainstorm is so severe that the streets are flooded, and the ambulance is slow in arriving. In the meantime, Alice and Flo try to keep Vera awake by walking her around and passing a bottle of ammonia beneath her nose.

This has gone on for a long time. Both Flo and Alice are exhausted. When the ambulance does arrive, the attendants go first to Alice because she is slumped over. She says it isn't her that needs assistance. They next head to Flo, who is also folded over the counter from depleted energy. She finally gets them directed to Vera.

Vera is taken out on the gurney as Calvin arrives. He announces that he couldn't kill himself because he forgot to buy bullets for his gun. Flo and Alice are greatly relieved, looking to the east where the sun is coming up on a clear morning. Shortly after that, Mel arrives. He announces that the place looks a mess. They had better step to it because the diner opens in ten minutes.
