- Hank and Pat come up for Easter. Ray and Pat have a nice time talking with each other, which make Robert and Debra jealous.
- The MacDougalls and the Barones are together at Ray's for Easter. The holiday starts with an argument with Hank wanting to go to their Presbyterian church, while Marie wanting to go to her Catholic church. Pat is more open minded and agrees as it would give her a chance to observe the other Christian denominations. Peter would be joining the family the following day and Ray is not super happy about that.
Pat suggests that everyone attempt a jigsaw puzzle that she brought from home. The families attempt to bond over a 500-piece puzzle, which belonged to Peter, it was called Sacred Death and had the image of a Heavy Metal Band to solve for. But only Ray and Pat stay up to do it. The rest drop out and leave one by one. Robert was trying to force fit the pieces even when they did not match.
Pat comments that she and Ray are a good team. While they work, they share private stories about themselves and their families. Pat reads Ray's column, ever since they became family. Pat takes a 20-minute drive daily to the library to read the newspaper which has Ray's column. Ray says that he is thinking of writing a book. Ray says that he hasn't told Debra as she does not even read his column. Pat suggests that maybe Debra doesn't read his column so much as she is busy with the kids. Also, she might be jealous as Ray leads an exciting life and meets many new people every day. Pat also admits that she is sometimes jealous of Hank's life even though he is a vice-principal of a high school.
Ray suggests that Marie won't read his work as she is disappointed that he didn't become a poet or her biographer. Pat says that in many ways Marie is still a little girl looking for acceptance and love. Ray finally returns to bed at 2 am. Debra is upset that Ray told Pat first that he is thinking of writing a book.
The next day, the family returns from church for Marie's brunch. Soon, everyone is talking about their "weird" friendship. Debra makes fun to Amy that Ray was talking to Pat till 2 am and deep, meaningful conversations. Robert feels that Ray is not satisfied with having Marie's love all to himself and is now after Pat affections too.
Robert tells Peter how Ray bonded with Pat, over his puzzle. Peter is mad that it was a collector's item, and Pat has destroyed its value by playing with it. Peter is also mad that Pat never talks to him about his comic book ideas, but Pat says that she has trouble relating to characters eating human flesh. Robert tries to talk to Pat but can't get beyond asking her favorite color (blue).
Marie is the last to find that Ray had a long and intimate conversation with Amy's mother till 2 am. Ray tries to defend his sweet relationship with Pat. Marie is upset since she thinks Ray is trying to replace her with Pat. Ray thanks Pat for not judging him or criticizing him, which he enjoyed. Ray realizes that she is nice to everyone. Her talk with Ray was not anything special for her as she talks like this to everyone. Everyone is back to being happy, except Ray.
