Per the title, the term stasis is from Greek for stop and when used in science-fiction means an artificial pause that stops all physical and chemical processes of life to put an individual into extended hibernation or suspended animation.
Winston is named after Winston Smith, the protagonist of the 1948 novel "Nineteen Eighty-Four" by George Orwell.
