Rumpole, with Guthrie Featherstone as his leader, defends Charlie Wheeler who is accused of robbery. Featherstone feels that the evidence is overwhelmingly against their client, but Rumpole learns that the police officer on the case may be bent and is known as "Dirty Dickerson". Rumpole takes a run at Dickerson in court but his tactics do little to help his client and lands him before a disciplinary committee hearing. Rumpole does find a way out of his and his client's predicament.
