A rumor circulated before filming that in the scene where Kevin and Winnie were in the barn during a thunderstorm, they'd be nude. Protest groups appeared on the lot, and when executive producer Bob Brush asked what they were protesting, they said, "They're not doing a love scene in the nude!" A baffled Brush replied, "You're damn right they're not!"
At the beginning of production, it was unclear as to whether the show would renew for another season or not--so the script was open-ended. Ultimately, the series ending elements, such as Kevin's closing narration, were added in post-production once the show was officially canceled.
Due to this being the series finale, Olivia d'Abo appears one last time as Karen.
Peter Billingsly (playing Mickey Spiegel in this episode) also starred in A Christmas Story (1983), which inspired "The Wonder Years."
The music used in the final scene, "Prologue" by Randy Newman, was also used in the final scene of the movie "The Natural" (1984).
