"Mister Rogers' Neighborhood" 1551: Families (TV Episode 1985) Poster

Fred Rogers: Mr. Rogers, X the Owl, Cornflake S. Pecially

Quotes

  • Mr. McFeely : Oranges grow on trees.

Mr. Rogers : I was just telling my friends about that.

  • Lady Aberlin : [reading from Orange-o-gram]  "Dear Cousin X..."

    X the Owl : Oh, it's from a cousin.

Lady Aberlin : I guess so.

  • X the Owl : I wish something grew on my tree.

Lady Aberlin : Leaves grow on your tree.

X the Owl : I mean something we could eat, or squeeze. You know what I mean.

  • Mr. Rogers : Most people don't have orange trees of their own because it takes a long time for them to grow, and they have to be grown in special warm parts of the world. So most people who want orange juice have to buy it in the store.

  • Mr. Rogers : [plants an orange seed]  Now this seed has the chance of growing into a tree, and real oranges can grow on that tree. Oranges like this one.

    [shows a whole orange]

  • Mr. Rogers : Do you like to drink orange juice, Mr. McFeely?

Mr. McFeely : I do. Sometimes we squeeze our own oranges, and sometimes we buy it frozen. But whatever we do, I like to call it O.J.

Mr. Rogers : Drinking your O.J.

Mr. McFeely : That's right. Drinking our O.J.

  • Mr. Rogers : When you plant an orange seed, you can be sure that the tree that grows from it will be an orange tree. It would never be an apple tree or a pear tree. Only an orange tree.

  • Mr. Rogers : When I was a little boy and would plant something in the ground, at first I thought it would grow very fast and I would be able to see something come up in just a few minutes. But as I grew very slowly, I realized that plants grow very slowly too. So little by little, I learned to wait. And waiting is such an important thing to learn to do.

  • Chef Brockett : When I was a little kid, very little, my mother and dad used to give me orange juice all the time. I liked oranges ever since.

Mr. Rogers : I liked them too, but here you are. Now you're giving all kinds of foods to many different people.

    Chef Brockett : That's right.

  • X the Owl : [recites a poem about cousins]  A cousin is a splendid thing./To think of all the joys they bring./My heart beats high with sounds that sing,/And songs that ring - a splendid thing,/A cousin.
