This film is a very disturbing study on race, sex, and growing up in the suburbs. There are many instances in which the characters are depicted to be in peril, but there is never any actual violence. The sexual scenes throughout the movie are generally consensual, with the exception of two scenes involving sex with a minor.

The scenes in which an adult male violently strikes his daughter, leaving visible bruises on her at least once, can be upsetting to watch.
