I made the mistake of watching this wit my wife. She remarked this is not a comedy, it is a documentary about living with you. The cheek!
With Ted Heath's Tory government crippled with strike action. Shortages of electricity, petrol queues at the filling station.
Alf Garnett finds out after coming home from a hard day's work. There is no food on the table fo him. Else is on a three day week.
Not even any bread for a bacon sandwich. Mike had the last of the bread. The chippy is closed and maybe the local Chinese takeaway is open.
Alf has his predictable rant, Else and Rita give him some what for back. Especially as Alf keeps a tight grip on the purse strings. She has sat on the same hard chair for years and she wants a new coat. Maybe even some new shoes.
It is good how Johnny Speight balanced topical news events with comedy. It gives a good snapshot of the times. It is also a reminder that Speight was a good comedy writer when the character of Alf is not always obsessed by race.
