- Adult David: You think you know about pain? Talk to my second wife. When she was 19 she got between a couple of fighting cats, and one of them went at her, climbed her like a tree, tore gashes out of her thighs and breasts and belly that you can still see today. She got 30 stitches and a fever that lasted for days. My second wife says that's pain. She doesn't know shit, that woman.
- [last lines]
- Adult David: The past catches up to you, whether you like it or not. It can be a gift or a curse if you let it. I will never forget the gift of Meg Loughlin, though I am plagued with the torment of failing again, failing somebody. But as she taught me, it's what you do last that counts.
- Ruth Chandler: Take a lesson, boys. Listen close. This is important.
- Ruth Chandler: All you gotta do is be nice to a woman, and she'll do all sorts of good things for you.
- Ruth Chandler: Take Davy here. He was nice to Meggy and he got himself a painting.
- Ruth Chandler: That is what you got, isn't it, David? I mean, is that all you got?
- David Moran: C'mon, Ruth.
- Ruth Chandler: I know you're a little young, but, um, these days you never know.
- Ruth Chandler: Huh, girls these days are just plain easy. That's their problem. Promise them a little something, and you can have whatever you want half the time.
- Ruth Chandler: Trust me. I know what I'm talking about.
- Ruth Chandler: Look at your own father, Davy. He screwed half the women in this town. Everyone knows it. You own mama knows it.
- Ruth Chandler: Oh don't be ashamed. At least he's the hard-woking sort, provides a decent home for his family.
- Ruth Chandler: One sound down here and I promise I'll kill the both of you. Not just punish you, kill you. Dead.
- [first lines]
- Charlie Franklin: [on David's voice mail] Hey David, it's Charlie Franklin calling to say Happy Birthday. Sorry I couldn't get those tickets, man. I know you were counting on me, but my brother-in-law's in town. I'll give you a call next week, and maybe we can get together. OK, have a good birthday. Take care.
- [David lies down beside a gravely injured Meg]
- Meg Loughlin: [barely audible] David?
- David Moran: Shh...
- [getting choked up]
- David Moran: Don't talk.
- Meg Loughlin: Do me a favor?
- David Moran: Sure.
- Meg Loughlin: Can you get my mother's ring back for me?
- [David cups her shoulder lightly before getting up, going over to Ruth's body and ripping the necklace with the ring off her neck. He then lies back down beside Meg and gently closes her hand around the ring and holding it in his own]
- Meg Loughlin: Thank you.
- [beat]
- Meg Loughlin: I thought at first you were a dream... I think you've been that for me... a dream. I have dreams. I have them and then they go away...
- [David becomes increasingly emotional]
- Meg Loughlin: I don't understand... how... how she could... hurt me down there...
- David Moran: [stammering through tears] Please... don't...
- Meg Loughlin: You're taking care of me now, aren't you?
- David Moran: Yes.
- Meg Loughlin: Susan too?
- David Moran: Yes.
- Meg Loughlin: [mumbling incoherently, and then...] I think... I love you.
- [pause]
- David Moran: [realizing she has passed away] No...
- [he begins to sob]
- David Moran: No!
