This film took my breath away. Such beautiful and powerful acting. From the first minute to the last it got under my skin. The situations and interactions are so recognizable that I worked through a variety of emotions, from childlike melancholy to raw hatred. The filmmakers did the story by author Griet op de Beeck more than justice, you do not need to have read the book to appreciate this film. Better to first see the film and than read the book I think.
  • I was afraid the movie would not live up to the expectations I had after reading the book, but it most certainly did. The directors created a real family with all their untold problems, frustrations and mechanisms. Characters so perfectly played that it made me mad at moments, wanted to scream out of frustration, or maybe to help them break their system.
  • Another fine example of the quality of Flemish cinema in Belgium. Subtle observation of a certain kind of toxic family relationships. The movie is so well directed and so well acted that it looks like a documentary.
