  • A look at the evolution of Mr. Moto and his sudden disappearance.

For the role of Moto, Peter Lorre was cast, possibly due in part to the past roles he played as serial killers and creepy characters, as writer Bruce McKenna suggests. This seems odd, because Moto is anything but a villain.

And then, due in large part to WWII, he disappeared. Where did he go? Out of the public consciousness apparently, because after the war "Stopover Tokyo" (1957) presents the return of a Mr. Moto story, though Moto himself is missing and completely replaced by a James Bondesque agent. (Interesting, given that Ian Fleming had actually appeared in an earlier Moto film.)
