Based on the short film of the same title from 2018. The short went on to win numerous awards at festivals and appears in its entirety (minus a couple of small edits) in the feature.
During the scene in the car, a baby's ultrasound is seen on a phone. At the bottom corner "It's a boy!" can be read. For the short, it was originally made to be a boy, but while writing the feature, J.R. felt it would play better for the baby to be a girl instead. They chose not to re-shoot any portion of the short, and decided to keep the "It's a boy" part as a small homage to the short that started it all.
While filming the hospital scenes, including Gaby's delivery scene, Producer Jose L. Martinez's wife went into labor herself. Both births, the film's birth and the real life birth, happened nearly simultaneously.
One day into commencing principal photography, Jennifer L. Sharp (Becka Boyd) found out she herself was pregnant. She didn't tell anyone other than J.R. and performed all her scenes, in the heat of summer, while somehow hiding her day long morning sickness and exhaustion. Her water broke 7 1/2 months later, within an hour of the film's DCP (print for Theaters) being complete. The baby was conceived at the beginning of pre-production and born hours after the final print was made, making it a true production baby.
The ultrasound of the baby, seen on Marcus' phone while he is in the car, is actually Writer/Director J.R. Poli's daughter's ultrasound from 7 years prior to filming. J.R. wrote the short film (which also features this scene) on a night where his mental health was being challenged. He attributes being snapped out of it to his daughter, Zoey, who called out from her room during the early hours of the morning. Therefor he decided to use her ultrasound in this scene. Zoey also plays Bella in the film.
