  • Having watched both seasons within the space of a few days one can say that it's a series that is watchable. We're having a heatwave at the moment so being stuck in the house meant that dross like this made the time pass quickly.

And one learnt from it too - Martinique despite being a part of France is clearly desperately poor yet has a cost of living equivalent to the mainland. I never knew that there was a thriving sex tourism industry there either with mouth-wateringly high prices for the black guys who serviced elderly and middle-aged Frenchwomen.

As for the plots they were pretty easy - as a person who's hopeless at whodunnits I got about half of the murderers right. One thing that struck me was that three of the stories had a LGBT theme and another had a side story about it. Again one learnt from this about the attitudes prevailing that are more in common with the developing world than Metropolitan France.

The two lead actresses and their sidekick Aurélien made an interesting team - it was formulaic but done well enough that one didn't groan about it. Should another series come out I'll watch it.
  • Love this (so far have seen Season 1 and 2, anxiously waiting for 3 and 4). The characters are interesting. Phenomenal setting (Martinique) and pretty good scripting, directing, acting. Light and refreshing. The cases are solved in each episode - which I prefer for police procedurals. I also like that there's not so much gabbiness and introspection - mostly action. There are some family and relationship issues that carry through across episodes - but I much appreciate that they are not handled melodramatically. Don't understand the poor reviews by other users. Also, I find many of the characters' quite riveting to look at (the lead was Miss France at one time). But they also can act.

This tries to follow the path of excellent Death in paradise but clearly falls. Main problem is both main characters are poorly written and not very sympathetic. Main failure is that screenwriters have tried them to be police women acting like old cliché policemen (drinking a lot, always looking for sex, etc.) and these sort of masculine personalities do not benefit their characters -otherwise poorly written - at all. The idea of putting together two different personalities should work fine but the problem is that both of them end acting the same and it becomes hasting and boring. Chief has two -as usual- unbearable egotist teenage children who you wish were sent yo study abroad or else. Her police companion is sort of a free-spirited one: no real engagement, living freely in a sailboat and constantly changing partner. Writers seem to confuse being independent, strong will women with a constant look for sex and not being able to deal with children. This only shows that women can be as stupid, empty brained and superficial as cliché men characters they are supposed to portray and this is the opposite that writers want - or isn't?

Also there is a disagreeable indoctrination smell floating over this series. Many episodes are about sexual matters: assaults, sex options, abortion, prostitution,...and while it is a regular basis for today's tv shows the way they are shown is outrageoulsy focused on trying to infuse a how to act and think lesson that is usually more than morally doubtful.

Opposite to Death in paradise here we mostly only see the ugly aspects of the islands: poverty, explotaiton, misery,...so not even worth watching for the landscapes.

A wasted opportunity to make a fun and entertaing show in a paradisiacal environment.
