  • I'll be honest, I had no real idea or interest for this game before playing it. I'm not a fan of the souls genre, but I do enjoy a challenge. You will die a lot, but not to the point of giving up on a boss. Unfortunately, a big part of the challenge is manoeuvring your character with the stiff controls and limited FOV. I really wish the camera wasn't so close to the protagonist, because it takes away from the experience. Frankly, it makes some deaths feel like they weren't your fault, which is always a bad thing in challenging games. After almost obtaining the platinum for it, I must say, this game did not disappoint overall. If you can find a friend to go through the story with, it's a solid 8/10. If not, then I must say it's more like a 7.5.
  • I really enjoyed this game. It's hard, which is nice. The shooting and the gameplay is good and suits and contributes a lot to the feeling of the game. Graphics are good enough and works well. The boss fights are overall very good. There's definitely a geat difference in difficulty between the bosses, which is good imo. They are generelly quite different from each other and gives you a different challenge and makes you do unique things/gameplan each time. It's also very nice that the semi open world and dungeons are different for each save, though I don't know if I like that you don't get all bosses in each save. Especially since the game is very short, around 15h if even that. Though it gives you more reason to replay the game which is definitely something you would do if you enjoyed your first playthrough.

The weapons and armors loot and overall progression over the game are overall a disappointment. You start with you class weapons and then you can buy the starting weapons from the other classes. Then you can't buy or craft new ones apart from the ones you can craft after killing bosses. And there's very few you find from loot. Kinda the same goes for armors. A lot of the weapons are cool though and it's good that you don't just use a regular gun all through as that would be boring.

Imo it's diasappointing killing enemies, discovering and looting in the semi open world and in dungeons as there's not that much loot, the main reason is to loot iron and better metals to upgrade your weapons and armor pieces. And to just clear the path to get to the next area, dungeon or main boss.

The core of the game is really good but it could have been so much better. Things I would like: * Longer game * Bigger semi open worlds, now it's just a path * Gear loot or gear crafting resources from regular enemies and elite enemies.

Wouldn't really recomment playing solo. I played it 2p and you can difinitely see it's made for 3p (or 2), for example there's usually a lot of smaller enemies that keeps spawning during the boss fights. In terms of difficulty I would probably play normal if solo. If you're 2 you can play normal and hard if you're experienced or want a challenge. Wouldn't touch the upper two difficulties unless you're 3 or really want a challenge if you're 2.

------- INTRODUCTION ------- (tldr at the end) Remnant From the Ashes has been described to me as 'Dark Souls with guns' which while not wrong it is a simplification as the game is more than that. I got this game in December of 2019 and while soon we would get a year that never ends me and my buddies did have a good time playing it. With Remnant II(2) out we thought it was a good idea to give Rem 1 another playthru. To quickly DISCLAIM that this playthru was done almost entirely as a three-player co-op on Nightmare difficulty(second hardest) and so you dear reader are more likely to have an easier time going through the game.

------- POSITIVES AND NEUTRALS ------- Starting us off with gameplay play the guns feel great, shooting at wood has never been so fun! Each weapon is punchy with some having a great feeling of weight and heft while others feel zippy like shooting a bunch of angry bees at the enemy(which is something you can do). Reloads feel and look fine but as the game has an over-the-shoulder camera they are quite simple, It's mostly the weapon sounds and recoil that give weapons this feeling. The movement feels fine, nothing too outstanding but nothing offensive either. Dodge rolling feels a little stiff but outside of the final boss of the Subject 2923 DLC, it works. Your character moves with some heft and wearing heavy armor adds to such a feeling, while it can screw you over it's something that you'll get used to. Aiming adds some slowdown to your character which gives some consideration as to when to shoot and when not to shoot as you can only fire when aiming this makes some encounters feel like a kind of dance as you kite enemies while picking the right time to return fire while trying to not get hit. The art direction is truly outstanding in this game. Despite the random nature of this game each zone, enemy, and item feels lovingly detailed as looking around the various worlds you travel to gives a real sense of atmosphere or awe depending on where you are. Every new area is a joy to explore, well somewhat but we'll get to it. The music is somewhat forgettable but does have some stand-out tracks that get you in the mood to shoot stuff or add tension to bosses. Also, there are breakable objects like boxes, pots, etc and yes they are fun to break.

------- NEGATIVES AND NIT-PICKS ------- Once again I'd like to point out that I played with two other friends on the second-to-hardest difficulty, this means that, one: you will most likely have an easier go of this, and two: enemies and bosses, who are already harder because of Nightmare, have also scaled up from playing in co-op so some of the things I bring up are from kinda not great scaling making enemies and bosses tankier than they have any right to be. Starting with bosses they suck! Well okay, that's not totally fair but many of the bosses in the game are elite enemies with an extra gimmick and a truck ton of adds which doesn't make for interesting fights as it just feels like the boss is trying to wear you down until you make a dumb mistake or run out of supplies. Again this is less of a problem with lower difficulties as enemies and bosses are easier to kill but that doesn't stop the problem of most bosses being forgettable, lame, and unfun to fight. While there are more bespoke bosses that are unique they still suffer from add spam helping to mask their simple boss design. Hell, one of the bosses was impossible as it had an instakill DPS check that we couldn't pass, we could only kill that boss when we were almost at the end of the game but no this boss wasn't a side boss it was one of the main ones( you can still skip it though by fight another, easier boss). And again easier difficulty bla bla bla, I know you're probably tired of reading me write about difficulty this and difficulty that but the main problem here is that you can only change the difficulty of the main campaign by restarting it which means if the going gets frustratingly rough in the later half of the game you either need to just push through it or restart everything. This aspect adds to the growing sense of frustration as I find the way Remnant increases the difficulty to be boring as it's just a percent increase in health, damage, and in the case of co-op enemy count. I don't think the game is too hard it's just unfair at times.

------- CONCLUION ------- Remnant From the Ashes is, despite the word count of the negatives section, a fine game. The weapons feel punchy, the art direction is great and it's fun to explore. The only real problems are that bosses are unfun and boring and difficulty is just weird. But I do think that if you like Souls Likes and 3rd person shooters you'll get your money's worth.
  • I hadn't even heard of this game before it's release. I just read somewhere that it was like dark souls with guns. I love the dark souls series. Tough games but with a nice balance, nothing that can't be achieved with practice. This game is very much the same. Nice trait system and a good choice of guns. I mainly played solo on my playthrough but the co-op is fantastic. You can jump into peoples worlds and face a multitude of bosses who you may never encounter in your world.

All in all it's a fantastic game and it's not even a full priced game.

I played on PS4, I haven't seen the game in disc version yet, only available to download on the PS store.
  • I don't even know what Souls-like even means until now. A Remnant from the Ashes is the first RPG, Souls-like game that I played and the first Souls-like game with guns. When I first started the game I started off with a sword and as I progressed I got my first two guns when I picked a class.

And as I progressed in the game the more that I level up my character and unlocked more levels to go the more difficult the game increased as usual. The game has an infinite backpack capacity to help players choose their own combat style, armor, and resources to fit. The game loot system is not very similar to games like Skyrim or Dragon's Dogma but it is still good. The shooting in the game is actually good even though it can't free aim at the other enemies and so is melee combat even if there is no target lock. And adding in-game gun mods that are added with fantasy magic is something that I have never seen before including guns that are filled with fantasy magic. Enemies were almost very fun to kill although I get killed instantly because of lacking upgrades and not enough items for healing. And Simulacrum is absolutely very rare to get when not upgrading my items and Dragonheart wisely.

This game also encourages me to play it with friends meaning if that boss or level is difficult I need players in order to beat a level. The only criticism is that this does not have a chat option for players who don't have a speaker which makes it frustrating that it is more of a speed run rather than a campaign because I missed on secret item or spot so side mission to activate.

I really like the campaign story in this game. It's not actually too perfect but it's actually pretty good. Although the story felt a little bit confusing, it's good but a little confusing. Sometimes I just always wonder what my character's place look like before he sailed off or why he use the starter sword called "The Blade of Adventure" I think of my theory that is a family heirloom.

In conclusion, I say that this Souls-like game with guns is something to look up to. And I hope that this game will have its own sequel to expand more of this story.
  • Graphics are pretty good, nothing special. Gameplay is not great. Movement in the game is also not great. And there's no way to know if a bad guy is coming up behind you (while fighting other bad guys) until they hit you.

    Warning: Spoilers
Graphics are good, story is interesting. However, it feels like a 90's game. Linear, stale and repetitive. Combat controls are slow and with every death, you restart at a checkpoint far away. Simply too frustrating gameplay overall.
