  • Thelma returns Diana's mink coat, and in it a cigarette case inscribed 'To Diana .......who came like a bat out of hell, love Geoffrey.' Diana has no idea where it came from.

Finally we get to learn where the wonderful title came from.

It gets deeper and more intriguing, the certainty of the first part is neatly unpicked in this episode, you start questioning the events, wondering if Geoffrey really is dead, or if he's somehow managed to escape, and begun tormenting his cheating wife.

It may be slow for some by today's standards, but I love this kind of mystery, already Durbridge is taking you on a wonderfully intriguing ride.

John Thaw and Sylvia Syms continue to make a good pairing, and Patsy Smart's turn as the dotty sweet shop owner is lots of fun.

    7/10.
