Rylea Nevaeh Whittet and Margaret Qualley in Maid (2021)

Important

This was not always an easy series to watch. It dealt with some very disturbing issues and sometimes it stayed in moments too long which caused the storytelling to be laboured (I have confess, I did a visual fast forward a couple of times). Inspired by a New York Times best selling memoir, which I have not read, it has the feel of something truly authentic, especially because it speaks of a kind of trauma that is incredibly personal yet unnoticed by others. I learned a great deal about this insidious terror and the mammoth climb (personal and government issue) for those who wish to get through it. There were two standout performances for me, Rylea Nevaeh Whittet, who is the youngest cast mate at 3 years old, and the breathtaking British Columbia locations. Margaret Qualley was a new face for me in the titular role and I was interested to learn she is Andie MacDowell's daughter. I was not surprised to learn she was a dancer, however, because of one of the rare moments of pure joy in the film (I'll let you discover that for yourself). Because of treatment of the subject matter, I think this is a must see series, which bumps up my rating to a 7.5 (important) out of 10. {Drama}

The mom should be more stressed

I really like the movie, but I hate the fact that the girl is in such a predicament, no home, problems with the job problems with the parents and so many struggles... yet she is so chill about it....so calm... I would be freaking out, and be stressed all the time... the actress should have done a better job and show more emotions...

Better than average ...

It's not quite the book version and it starts jumping the shark around episode five.

I do look forward to seeing Rylea Nevaeh Whittet in future work.

If You Can Get Past The Piss Poor Decisions

I started and stopped watching this series 3 times because of the horrible decisions this young lady was making. I finally realized it wasn't about this woman. It's about babies having babies... substance abuse... domestic abuse... mental illness and dependency. If you can get past this person's piss poor choices long enough... you start to enjoy the portrayal of good people ready to help. Great role played by BJ Harrison. Very good acting from Andie MacDowell as the dingbat mother. And thank god her mother got in the way of another of her poor decisions.

Not bad, but not a gem

I found out there are a lot of good reviews coming out from this one, and that's the main reason why I decide to watch it. Well, the story plot is actually pretty good. I love the way how the woman is trying to struggle and survive so hard for her daughter. Her life seems very depressing with never ending problems, and I think most her problems are due to her own stupidity, geez. Well, I can see why people tend to like it, because it's actually quite heartwarming.

However, I think 10 episodes are too much because there are too many unnecessary scenes and I don't even think it is related to the main story. Overall it is not bad, but it is also not a gem to me.

Close to real life

I enjoyed this limited series. Storyline was excellent and very relatable to how things work within our broken social services. I've enjoyed Andie MacDowalls previous performances but her character was super annoying perhaps by her screeching. Other than that, outstanding performances by the remaining cast.

Not as good as i expected

I really expected a better series because of 8.5 IMDB score and 95%rotten tomato rate, But i watched 8 episodes and it is not as good as I expected.

The daily life of a young mother who work as a maid . She also write some stupid memories and she thinks she is a writer.

The leading character ,Alex is not lovable . She is cold, headstrong and with stupid pride. She even doesn't know what she wants. She kidnapped her child to make a better life for her, but she even didn't have a house . And sleep with her child at street.

There were two good man who wanted to live with her but that annoying woman lived like a homeless .

It was OK she wasn't a mother. But as a mother she is so selfish.

Good, but much too long

Excellent performances, but much too long and way too repetitive. Andie MacDowell gives an incredible performance, the best of her career. One observation: the "F" word is spoken literally every sentence, sloppily reinforcing stereotypes. It's laziness on the part of the writers and an absence of meaningful dialogue.

Maid is a solid, heartfelt drama

Maid is a solid, heartfelt drama that offers an honest look at resilience and survival, though it doesn't always hit the mark.

Created by Molly Smith Metzler, the series follows Alex, portrayed by Margaret Qualley, whose performance brings vulnerability and strength to the character, making her journey relatable and engaging. The direction and production are thoughtfully executed, with a careful attention to detail that adds depth, but the series occasionally falters with its lengthy episodes, leading the pacing to feel stretched.

While Maid doesn't reach the level of a truly standout series, it's a well-crafted, empathetic story that resonates, making it worth the watch for fans of character-driven drama.

Lucky to accidentally catch this one!

The wife started watching this one the other Sunday... never intended to watch but within minutes was on the couch with her binging this well directed, written, and acted series.

We all live inside our own bubble and this one gives you a first hand peak into someone else's struggle that is real for way to many.

I applaud all those involved, as it is very well done and touching. No need to read reviews that lay out the synopsis. Sit back and enjoy!

Keep those involved with this one on your radar.

An admirable attempt at portraying the struggles of poverty in the US

This show brings to light a problem which has been persisting in the US for years, where being poor makes everything more difficult and basically traps you in a cycle of poverty. It portrays the bureaucratic nightmare of applying to aid programs, many of which are nearly impossible to get. Her being a maid honestly doesn't really factor into the show that much, it is moreso about her relationships with her abusive boyfriend and estranged relatives.

My gripe with the show, however, is that the ways money and jobs are portrayed don't really make much sense. At first I thought maybe the writer was from another country, but apparently she was born in the US, so I have to assume she has just never really experienced any hardships herself and perhaps has lived a relatively privileged life. The show lists prices in the top right sometimes and they are wildly inconsistent. In the gas station, she's buying snacks and cleaning supplies for less than a buck each, which, yeah no. Then a parking ticket costs 200+ dollars? And a ferry ticket costs 20 dollars just to go across a lake? I'm sorry what? Also, Sean works as a bartender in what appears to be a super fancy restaurant yet they have no money, whereas in real life he'd be making bank from tips. And sure, he drinks alot but he clearly is just buying cheap can beer so it's not like that would drain his money too much. Then Alex says she only has 9 bucks extra a week working 25-29 hours at 12 bucks an hour, which again, makes no sense. 25 hours a week that's roughly 225 bucks after taxes, she's using food stamps for groceries and has subsidized housing AND daycare, how does she only have 9 bucks extra a week? And the most unrealistic part of it all is when her mother goes to the hospital and they don't even stress about the medical costs. Because for a poor person with no health insurance going to the hospital with a serious injury is TERRIFYING and could put that person in debt for years if not decades.

It's just odd that with all the research about US aid programs they couldn't have researched typical prices, incomes, and expenditures of people living in or near poverty. It was still an entertaining show, but maybe next time the writer wants to tackle the issue of poverty in the US, maybe get some input from actual people living on minimum wage first.

White person version of the Pursuit of Happiness

I liked this show, took me a minute to get into it & then it lost me a little, but got me back towards the end. Has a decent story line & a heart warming-ish end! It defiantly struck me as the whole people version on the classic Will Smith movie, The Pursuit of Happiness. It's worth a watch.

Good but...

I loved this story and I love Adie McDowell, but her character is awful and everywhere. If not for her character this is a nine-star rating from me. But then again, what do I know?

Good story bad music

I can't deny its a good story, but I feel the line between comedy and drama isn't well marked. Also the music choices are so odd or basic im dragged out of the story by disconnecting the feelings in the visuals with the music.

Alex seams too smart ....

... to be making so many bad decisions.

I generally like this show. But I'm wondering, if she is so broke, who's paying for her cellular service? She's always on her phone.

Good performances save it

So we r meant to feel sorry for the main character when actually she is selfish, uses people and expects tax payer to pay for everything for her, when she isnt using other people that she just drops when they can no longer help.

But the acting performances from pretty much everyone was good.

The clicling instead of clapping was...just meh. Nearly took a point off just for that.

An interesting feministic tale

In this picture absolute most of the males are being represented as soulless not carrying a**holes, and females are only the victims.

It's a great time to boost your feminist takes on the world.

Compelling Story

Single moms are truly heroes. This story reminds us that families are not perfect, especially young ones. There are no excuses for any type of abuse, but if animal-like behavior (w/alcohol never as an excuse) can evolve into responsible adulthood, family steps up for family.

As a parent, I do identify with this protagonist as in I would do anything for my children.

The only real negative is the horrible indi music. I muted most of it but it is worth investing in actual popular music from industry-recognized musicians. If TGI Friday's can pay for classic music, so can Netflix. The show itself is sad, but the music is depressing. Not just the tone, but the quality. But hey, the musicians got their checks, so good for them also grinding for their families. 😎

She's so dumb!!

It's a pretty good show but she's just so dang dumb. She really makes poor decisions and looks so dumbfounded at times. Lol!! Overall it's a decent show and I will continue watching it and finish the season.
