- One Year Later
Jeff stands over Bill's grave and looks at the tombstone of his best friend. He imagines his father Alvin comes up and asks Jeff if he's going to say anything, and Alvin looks around and says that he misses the city and it was a part of him. He says that Bill loved Freeland, and Jeff tells Alvin that Bill died because he let Bill into Black Lightning's world. Alvin tells him that people die all the time, and Jeff says that it's a good thing Black Lightning's world doesn't exist anymore, because Black Lightning is dead.
Alvin tells Jeff that Freeland needs him, and Jeff tells him that the city doesn't need him. His father says that it's about the living, How they live their lives to make them worth celebrating is what matters. With that, Alvin disappears.
Jeff drives through town and listens to a radio broadcast about the 1-year anniversary of the Markovian invasion, and how people are celebrating. There is still concern about the levels of violence because of the fighting between The 100 and the Kobra Cartel over territory. Mayor Black and the police force are unable to do anything about it.
A boy is walking home, holding his violin. Two policemen pull over, and one of them yanks the boy over and asks where the drugs are. Both officers slam the protesting boy on the hood, and Jeff drives by and sees them. He parks, gets out, and says that he knows the boy and he's innocent. The officers tell Jeff to get back in his car, and when Jeff refuses both of the officers draw their guns and advance on him.
The boy runs off, and Jeff mutters that he's tired of it. He blasts both officers, lifting them into the air, and then drops them. They pass out, and Jeff zaps their brains to wipe their memories, blasts the car and its dashcam, and drives off.
In a hospital, Anissa sits at the bedside of a comatose Grace. Jennifer is with her sister, and suggests that she move on with her life after a year of waiting for Grace to wake up. Anissa points out that Jennifer didn't do that for Khalil, and Jennifer points out that every time Anissa leaves Grace's room, she has tears in her eyes. Her older sister insists that she's fine.
Lynn comes in and tells Anissa that there's been no change in Grace's condition. Grace's shapeshifter physiology is blocking the treatments, but they've developed a cocktail of drugs that they think might work.
Jeff and Lynn meet with their marriage counselor, and Lynn tells her husband that it feels like he's abandoned them. He says that Lynn left him and the girls, and he lost his brother. Jeff wonders where the compassion is, and points out that Lynn just went back to the lab. Lynn says that Anissa and Jennifer need Jeff's help and guidance, and Jeff points out that they don't listen to him but he's always been there for them.
The therapist interrupts, asking Lynn how her sobriety is. Lynn says that it's great, and the therapist asks if the lack of intimacy they said the last time has improved. Her patient says that there is no intimacy, and she and Jeff are on separate pages. Jeff tells the therapist that there is no sex, and Lynn shuts him down whenever he wants to. Lynn says that Jeff is emotionally absent, and the therapist tells them that intimacy involves trust. She says that intimacy can be rewarding if they are honest with each other and has to be there first.
Lauren Caruso meets with Peter at a restaurant and tries to convince him to join the company she's recruiting for. Peter figures that her company is fleecing Freeland, not rebuilding it. He tells Lauren that they have to speak honestly if he's going to even consider the job offer, and Lauren insists that they're there to do good. She needs someone to oversee their security systems, and tells Peter that he deserves a job like that after everything he's sacrificed. Peter passes but says it was worth seeing her. Lauren kisses him and says that it's good to know he's alive, and asks if they're going to take advantage of that knowledge. He says that he hopes so, and Lauren goes out.
Peter notices something playing on the bar TV, and has the bartender turn it up. Mayor Black is at a conference giving respect to Bill, and he calls up Jeff to speak about Bill. Jeff says that Bill would have found everything about his death over the top, and tells the people that Bill loved Freeland. He echoes Alvin's words, and says that Bill died fighting for the city and the people he loved.
Black introduces the new chief of police, Ana Lopez. Lopez says that Bill would still be alive except for the large number of undocumented metas in Freeland.
Lynn is watching the broadcast, and listens as Lopez says that she will make sure every meta is documented and tagged so they can track them at all times.
Next, reporter John Webb talks with Tobias about his philanthropy. Tobias says that he'll do whatever it takes to get Freeland back on its feet, and he's donated money to rebuild the institutions destroyed by the war.
That night, Jeff is at home, making supper for Anissa and Lynn. He swears, and his wife and daughter come over. Tobias says that Black knows he's totally committed to making Freeland great again. Anissa wants to kill Tobias, and Jeff and Lynn disagree. Jeff notes that killing Tobias won't bring back anyone he's killed, and Anissa tells him that she's concerned with the living. She figures that Jennifer is out flying around again, and says that Tobias has a plan and knows who they are.
Lynn agrees with Anissa, saying that she's okay with murder if it protects her family. She says that it's survival and justice, not murder. Anissa points out that she, Lynn, and Jennifer have killed before, and Tobias will come after them eventually. Jeff says that Tobias is off-limits to anyone but him, says that Jennifer isn't taking the flying thing seriously, and walks out.
Thunder is flying, and hovers while summoning a cloud of energy around her.
Jeff goes to 2-Bit's bar and drinks, and Peter comes in. He sits down with Jeff and says that he's been trying to meet with Jeff. Peter says that he knows what's going on, and tells him that drinking isn't going to make Jeff anything but reckless. He knows that Jeff attacked the cops, and Peter tells him to wear the uniform so he isn't identified. Jeff insists that he saved the boy, not Black Lightning, and Jeff is just trying to save his family while Black Lightning was trying to save the world.
Peter tells Jeff that there were street cams and he took care of them. He warns Jeff that using his powers without the suit isn't good for his nervous system, and Jeff insists that he's not putting on the suit and none of them should be. Jeff says that it's never been like it is now: Bill is dead, and his family have killed. They think it's okay, and don't respect anything Jeff says. Peter tells Jeff that they're scared and they should see that Jeff is human. He promises that Jeff will have to get back up, and Jeff points out the repeat of the Tobias interview that is running on the bar TV.
Jeff figures that Tobias' money has let him reinvent himself, and now he's a hero. He says that the world is upside down
Lala is in his office watching Tobias saying in the interview that he plans to clean up the gangs. Angry, Lala shoots out the TV screen and says that he's one that kept the people of Freeland working during the war. His lieutenant Devonte asks if the shipment is coming in, and Lala says that it will be on the shipment and he needs Devonte to separate the weapons from the product and bring the weapons directly there.
A woman is walking to her car outside the hospital, when two men come out of a van and grab her. Lynn comes out, wearing a mask, and uses Gravedigger's "pushing power" to take control of one man, and then sends the woman on her way. The other man draws his gun on Lynn, and she tells the second man to knock him out. The second man does so, and Lynn tells him to never traffick another girl again. Lynn "pushes" him to go to the station and make a full confession, and Lynn goes to her car and removes her mask, gasping.
Lynn makes a video journal saying that it's been over 48 hours since she injected herself with Gravedigger's powers. She figures that she's successfully extended the duration of the powers, and her goal is to isolate the metagene to the point where she can use it against any attack on Freeland, including Gravedigger. Lynn determines from the blood sample that Gravedigger's powers will fade in 12 hours, and she can try another metagene. She wonders why the first man didn't respond to her "push", and figures that she needs Jeff's help
Jeff leaves the bar and receives an incoming call, from Bill's phone. He answers it using his Black Lightning voice, and the man on the other end says that Jeff should go to a spot he knows at 11. Jeff will find an envelope there. With that, the caller hangs up.
The 100 men are unloading the shipment. A hummer pulls up and the men open fire on it. Lightning and Thunder get out and attack the men, taking them down with their powers, then drive off with the shipment.
Detective Hassan Shakur is waiting at the rendezvous, and knows Black Lightning is watching him. He asks if the hero read the letter in the envelope, and Black Lighting speaks from the shadows, asking why Hassan is reaching out after a year. The detective says that he needed time to decide if he should kill Black Lightning for getting his friend and mentor Bill killed, or if he should trust the hero and help him... like Bill asked him to.
Hassan tells Black Lightning that he's still considering his options, but wanted to honor Bill's request as best he could. He admits that he has an issue with Black Lightning: the hero gave up on Freeland even though Bill said Black Lightning never did. Hassan tells Black Lightning to call him when he grows his balls back, and drives off. Jeff, still not wearing the suit, watches Hassan go.
Lala meets with Devonte and his people at the shipment site, and sits in his car alone at first. He finally gets out, goes over, and says that he was thinking about which one he was going to kill. Lala says that he's trying to be a different man and won't kill anyone that night, and tells them to set up a fake buy. He figures that someone is snitching, Lala tells Devonte to give them the guns, and Devonte takes energy weapons out of the trunk of his car and gives them to the 100 men. The gang leader tells his men to kill Thunder and Lightning if they show up, or he'll kill his men.
The next day, Jeff goes to his office at the high school and sits at his desk. He opens the envelope Hassan left him, from Bill, and in it Bill says that if Jeff is reading it then he's dead. Bill says that it was a pleasure knowing Jeff, and Jeff can trust Hassan the way he trusted Bill. Once Jeff is done reading, Lopez and Hassan come in to talk with him.
Lopez introduces Hassan and says that he found something that they brought to Jeff. Hassan tells Jeff that two cops were brutally attacked and sent to the ICU, and one of the cameras got a partial match on one of six people in Freeland. One of them is Jeff, and Lopez says that the other five all have alibis. She asks Jeff if he was near the street where the attack occurred, and Jeff says that he was after visiting Bill's grave and then went to a counseling session with his wife.
The police chief asks how Jeff would explain the partial plate number, and Jeff says that he doesn't have an explanation. The two officers leave and Hassan tells Lopez that Jeff is lying. She says that she knows.
That night at the fake buy, Thunder and Lightning fly down and attack the 100 men. A sniper fires at them with an energy weapon and hits Thunder, and Lightning takes him down. Thunder goes to her sister and tries to wake her up. She takes her to the lab, and calls in Lynn and Jeff. Lynn says that Jennifer is healing rapidly, and Jeff asks Anissa what happened. She says that it felt like a set-up, and Jeff tells them that they're too over-zealous. Lynn says that if Jeff had been with them, it might have gone differently. He doesn't want to hear it.
Peter arrives and Jeff tells him to bring up the footage from Jennifer's bodycam. When Peter does so, Jeff has him run the sniper's face through the facial recognition database. The name comes up and Jeff leaves.
Jeff goes to the apartment of the shooter, and blasts the door open. The man goes for a gun, and Jeff slams him to the floor and then slams him around. Once the shooter is stunned, Jeff drags him out in the hallway, slams him against the wall, and shoots electricity into his eyes until the shooter passes out.
Later, Jeff sits at home and stares at the fireplace while drinking. Lynn comes in and apologizes for earlier. She admits that she was scared, and Jennifer is back to normal and will hang with Anissa. Jeff points out that Lynn insinuated that if he had been there, Jennifer wouldn't have been shot. Lynn refuses to argue and says that she sees that Jeff is hurting. She thought Jeff would handle it differently, and admits that she didn't appreciate his point of view.
They take each other's hands, and Jeff says that he's fine. Lynn says that she's going up to bed, and asks Jeff to come with her. Jeff tells her that he'll be up in a little while, and Lynn leaves.
At the hospital where the shooter is in ICU, Hassan and Lopez arrive. Hassan figures that Black Lightning is back and crippled all of his victims. However, Black Lightning has never intentionally crippled anyone in the past.
Lynn returns to the lab, and finds Tobias there. A lab assistant tells Lynn that they just gave a tour of their lab to Tobias, and Tobias acts like he's never met Lynn before. Tobias has joined the board of directors and made a donation to their facility. He tells Lynn that they'll see more of each other and leaves to finish his tour.
Thunder goes out flying, and her powers shut down. She passes out and begins falling.
