Keep in mind, I made this account about two minutes ago just to warn you about this movie. I watched this movie with my sisters last night. We all genuinely enjoy horror films, and find that watching them together can help with the scary moments of good horror films, and provide some comedy for bad ones.
This one was just bad. Hands down. No question about it.
Not only were the subtitles weirdly formatted (grammatical errors, disjointed writing and non sequitur topics of conversation), but the plot, if you can even call it one, was horrendous. They was too much happening, yet not enough at the same time, which is hard to do, so congrats, I guess.
The music was jarring and misplaced, relying heavily on jump scares that weren't scary in the slightest. They weren't even enough to elicit a tiny jump from any of us. The sound effects were weird and the supposedly "scary" music made scenes predictable and unenjoyable.
The cinematography was subpar at best. The shaky camera effects weren't utilized in any decent way whatsoever, and it made one feel disoriented and weird, and not even in the good way.
The dialogue was atrocious, with half of the movie feeling like all anyone was saying were each other's names or that nursery rhyme they all kept repeating. Hearing Kanaya shout "Marsha!" and "Lala!" over and over again was repetitive and boring. (Also, that's not how you play hide and seek; you don't call out for people once they've hid. That defeats the purpose. It just bothered me)
The setting was weird, and at times, downright laughable. Sure, the party at the beginning was all fancy and such, but it's like they didn't even try to make the hospital look like a hospital. I tried to suspend my disbelief, I really did, but as soon as a saw a carpeted hospital, I had to laugh. There was a desk in Tedi's hospital room. Seriously? And I was immediately taken out of one of the final scenes when Kanaya just struts behind these front desk like she owns the place, and the nurse just answers her questions like that's a normal occurrence.
And the characters. Oh, God, the characters. They were barely people, and they were introduced so suddenly that it's almost impossible to feel anything but frustration for all of them. Neither of the lead characters were likable in any way, shape, or form, and I even found myself rooting for their failure. They either overreacted to everything or under-reacted. There was almost never a decently realistic reaction, except for when Marsha appears in Tedi's car. Even then, he s
And the plot. What even was the plot? I'm being serious, there was practically no cohesion in the entire story. The entire experience is you asking yourself "Wait, what's happening? Why are they doing that? Why would you say that? No one would ever do that, what is going on?" It was jarring to try and figure out what was even happening in the movie. Trust me, I don't like to be spoon fed a plot or an idea or a story, but I also don't want my food slapped out of my hand, smeared on the wall, and set on fire. Some clarity would be nice. The entire conflict was so conveniently explained in like, a minute, and resolved (with heavy quotation marks) in about four minutes. The movie is about an hour and 25 minutes of filler that only serves to confuse the audience. Oh, her father remarried and she's real upset about it! Oh, but now she's in a hospital and it's spooky! Wait, now she's in a...summer home? Wait, who's this yoga teacher? Woah, slow down, what are you doing? Why aren't you worried about the ghost? Why are you still here where the ghost is? Shouldn't you maybe get out of there? Wait, why-oh. Well, that's stupid.
This movie was a waste of my time. My only entertainment came from being able to crack jokes at it, otherwise I think I would've gone crazy with boredom.
Watch it if you want. It made me laugh, but only because I had people who are funny to watch it with. This movie isn't a movie; rather, it's loosely tied together scenes playing one after another with no plot, no character development or interest, no emotional investment, out of place and redundant music.
Don't waste your time.
