FAQ

Rango

FAQ

When watching the supplements of the extended version, one gets the impression that some of them have been removed because they may have been too daring for childrens eyes. Some of the jokes, e.g. on the bankers corpse, are really a bit rough for a film which is aimed at children; and perhaps they did not want to teach the children that spitting can be cool sometimes either. It is rather unlikely that the cut was necessary for the PG. Maybe Paramount took care of that on its own. Overall, the Extended version is 4:42 minutes longer.

Many people have taken Johnny Depp's credit as a character named "Lars" to mean that Rango's real name is Lars, but this is false.

Rango's real name is never revealed in the film, which ties into the theme of him being "The Man with No Name"... or rather "The Lizard with No Name", if you will...

"Lars" is actually a code name for the Raoul Duke caricature that Johnny Depp voices near the beginning of the film. They probably couldn't use the name "Raoul Duke" because of copyright issues with Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998) (book and movie), which would have been quite expensive for the film's budget.

Near the beginning of the film, when Rango is being thrown about on the road, he lands on the windshield of a red convertible driven by none other than Raoul Duke, with Dr. Gonzo riding in the backseat. Raoul mutters something to Gonzo, and then mutters something else before using the windshield wipers to throw Rango off the car.

What he first says is, "Whoa! There's another one!" and then he says, "I knew it..."

This is an obscure (and quite hilarious) reference to a scene in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998) where Raoul Duke hallucinates being in the middle of a "reptile zoo." It is also a nod to Johnny Depp, as he played the main characters in both this movie and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998) respectively.
