  • Bud Lee, a pioneering director from the Old School (story development, characters, feature filmmaking) departs from the standard 5-vignette style of a Penthouse DVD with "Possessed", a so-so drama of an unscrupulous scientist. The title is misleading as is the tag line on the DVD box: "The things you own, end up owning you".

The pretty ladies led by busty blonde Brooke Banner are merely inmates in Dr. Mortimer's Institute, where Mortimer, played cooly by Steven St. Croix, experients on them with a form of mind contol involving taping them having sex and having them watch the sex acts in a form of conditioning. After joining in with Brooke and Holly West in a threesome finale, Mortimer is busted by the FBI, including an unbilled cameo by Lee as an FBI agent.

What makes this different is that even though the DVD menu lists separate sex scenes, in the manner of today's emphasis on separate sex scenes for individual streaming and consumption, the show is fully integrated, with teasers for sex scenes, interruption by dialog scenes, and cross-cutting between the ongoing sex acts, just like a real Adult feature of old.

I found that aspect of "Possessed" refreshing, but clearly Lee, nearing the end of his Hall of Fame directing career, didn't have his heart in it. Uncredited screenplay does not develop an interesting story beyond Mortimer's taking advantage of the women, and individual charaterization is paper thin. So despite the different approach, it ultimately devolves into mechanical sex content.

Most of the crew is enlisted in supporting NonSex roles, which get screen credit as "Extras" at the end, a plus for film historians.
