Someone close to Dexter manages to track him down. Meanwhile, he questions whether he can suppress the murderous urgings of his Dark Passenger when a local hot shot behaves recklessly.

For the past decade, Dexter has been living a quiet, isolated life far away from the temptations of his past. He's found comfort in a new identity and has assimilated into small-town life as a beloved member of the Iron Lake community. Having fled Miami, Dexter lives since ten years in a wood cabin in small rural town Iron Lake in upstate New York as James 'Jim' Lindsay, working at the local gun shop and dating police chief Angela Bishop. Dexter's rigorous daily workout routine controls his homicidal urges, while heeding advice from Debra, who haunts his memories. This routine is shattered when his teen son Harrison, finds him and is initially told no match, then invited to stay indefinitely. Delivering at a party reckless local Matt Caldwell a high-end hunting rifle, just to boast and outclass his penniless buddy Bill, Dexter learns from the latter, who is paid by father Caldwell for his silence, that party animal Matt once killed five people pointlessly by running his powerboat into another craft intentionally.
