Seven years ago, a young filmmaker named Malcolm Washington made the regional festival rounds with his debut short film, “Benny Got Shot,” and won the filmmaker-to-watch award at the Atlanta Film Festival among other honors. This year, Washington has made his feature film debut with “The Piano Lesson,” an August Wilson adaptation with an all-star cast and an awards-friendly release date from Netflix. Malcolm Washington has screened “The Piano Lesson” at several top film festivals this fall – including the Telluride Film Festival and the Toronto International Film Festival – and will be honored with the Breakthrough Director award at this year’s Montclair Film Festival.

Everyone in the band knew there was a problem, even if they didn’t know exactly how to fix it.
It was 1978, and nearly a decade into their recording career, Kool & the Gang — the once-dominant jazz and funk group whose biggest hits propelled clubs all over the world — were at a low point. Their last two albums had been duds, swallowed whole and spit out by the disco revolution that ostensibly should have held up the horn-driven New Jersey band as gods. “We’d tried our hand at our version of disco,...

Sebastian Stan is crediting Christian Bale for inspiring his unconventional roles.
Stan told GQ UK that fellow MCU star Bale was a guiding light early in his career.
“Watching Christian Bale do ‘The Fighter’ and watching him do ‘Batman’ and ‘Vice’ and ‘The Machinist’… He was a guy that, to me, could have made very conventional choices because he’s very good at any of it,” Stan said. “But then he’s trying these things.”
Stan has appeared in TV series such as “Gossip Girl” before making his indie debut with films like “I, Tonya,” “Fresh,” and “A Different Man.” The actor has also had a decade-long role in Marvel films with the “Captain America” franchise.
Stan also credited the versatility of Robert Downey Jr., who will return to the MCU as Doctor Doom after playing Iron Man, for carving out yet another aspirational career path.

Sebastian Stan has likened playing Donald Trump to "riding a psychotic horse through a blazing stable".The 42-year-old star portrays the former US president in Ali Abbasi's movie 'The Apprentice', which delves into his early years as a real estate businessman in New York, and confessed that it was daunting to take on the part of such a polarising figure. In an interview with Empire magazine, Sebastian said: "Working on it with Ali was like riding a psychotic horse through a blazing stable."We're talking about somebody that everyone has an opinion about, that everyone has an impression of, that everyone has strong feelings for."The 'Fresh' actor explained how he watched plenty of material featuring Trump and others impersonating the controversial politician but didn't want his portrayal to have too much outside influence. He said: "I watched everything. Hellboy: The Crooked Man has had a highly unconventional release, arriving in a handful of counties across the globe before hitting UK cinemas this Friday.
While the movie was never particularly highly anticipated, we'd expected some sort of theatrical release as, with a lower budget, it's possible enough fans would have turned out to make Brian Taylor's reboot a moderate hit.
Instead, it seems the movie may have failed to find a distributor in the U.S. as various VOD platforms are now showing Hellboy: The Crooked Man as being available for pre-order with a Tuesday, October 8 release.
That means it will go up at 12am Et on the 8th but at 9pm Pt on October 7. A limited theatrical release is still possible but, as we expected, this movie is largely bypassing the big screen and going straight to Digital (which is the equivalent these days to a direct-to-dvd...

Odessa A’zion (Fresh Kills) is the newest addition to the cast of Marty Supreme, A24’s new film directed by Josh Safdie.
No word on the role to be played by A’zion. She joins a pretty electic ensemble led by Timothée Chalamet, which will also include Gwyneth Paltrow and musician Tyler, The Creator. Other new additions announced today include magician Penn Jillette, Shark Tank panelist and entrepreneur Kevin O’Leary (a.k.a Mr. Wonderful) and filmmaker Abel Ferrara.
While plot details are being kept under wraps, the pic has been reported as being loosely inspired by pro ping pong player Marty Reisman. At the same time, sources close to the production stress that it’s a fictionalized original, rather than a biopic.
Safdie and Ronald Bronstein penned the script and will produce alongside Eli Bush, Anthony Katagas, Chalamet and A24. Production is set to kick off this fall.

As the release of Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2 looms just a week away, excitement is building among fans of the iconic franchise. However, for newcomers to the vast Warhammer 40K universe, there’s one lingering concern: Will they be able to fully enjoy the game without extensive knowledge of the lore?
The game is a sequel to the original 2011 title. | Image Credit: Saber Interactive
It’s a valid worry, especially considering how the Marvel Cinematic Universe under Kevin Feige has grown increasingly inaccessible to casual viewers due to its interconnected storytelling. With Space Marine 2 being a sequel to a decade-old game and set in a universe with 45 years of history, the potential for confusion is high. But Saber Interactive has a reassuring message for both veterans and newcomers alike.

Adam Sandler has been making audiences laugh for decades, from his early comedy albums to hit films like Happy Gilmore and Billy Madison. In recent years, he’s also found great success sharing new material through Netflix comedy specials. His 2018 special, 100% Fresh, showed Sandler’s skills at weaving stand-up, songs, and touching tributes into a seamless show.
This time around, Sandler enlisted an unconventional director, Josh Safdie, known for gritty films like Uncut Gems. Their new special Love You takes a cinematic approach, playing more like a surreal oddity than a traditional stand-up set. Shot documentary-style, it follows Sandler from the moment he arrives at a rundown theater, getting harassed by fans along the dusty backstage halls.
Once on stage, the unusual venue and directorial flourishes keep things intriguingly off-kilter. Safdie seems to subtly subvert expectations at every turn. But the heart of the special remains Adam Sandler’s hilarious,...

Back in 2018, comedian Adam Sandler made an impressive return to the comedy special scene with "100% Fresh," which fully delivered on what the title promised. Filmed at several different venues with varying crowd sizes, ranging from a more intimate Comic Strip stand-up club with dozens of fans to a massive theater with hundreds of people, the special featured Sandler doing bits of stand-up mixed with comedic songs about topics like Uber, heated toilet seats, and always remembering your phone, wallet, and keys when you're heading out somewhere. But Sandler also delivered some more nostalgic and lovely songs, such as "Bar Mitzvah Boy" and a heartfelt tribute to the late, great Chris Farley.
This year, the Sandman is back with "Adam Sandler: Love You," a brand new comedy special with all-new material and a surprising director behind the camera: Josh Safdie, one half of the Safdie brothers directing duo responsible for Sandler's intense,...

“Twisters” is sweeping audiences off their couches and into the theaters.
The standalone follow-up to “Twister” (1996) grossed over $80 million in its first weekend and was the third highest-grossing film of 2024.
Glen Powell, Daisy Edgar-Jones and Anthony Ramos lead the disaster film as a ragtag group of storm chasers. Jones plays Kate Carter, a once disaster-seeker turned to corporate weather pro, while Powell plays Tyler Owens, a viral “tornado wrangler.” The two team up with Javi, a longtime friend of Kate’s played by Anthony Ramos, to tackle the biggest twister Oklahoma’s seen in generations.
The cast also features some newcomers but (spoiler alert!) no cameo from Helen Hunt. For the complete “Twisters” cast and character guide, keep reading.

If that number holds once the final count is in on Monday, it will be the third-biggest box office debut of the year, behind only "Inside Out 2" and "Dune: Part Two."
Original article follows.
Nothing is safe from the suck zone of a tornado. It wrecks houses, it steals chickens, and now it has captured the wallets of moviegoers as well. Lee Isaac Chung's "Twisters" is off to a rip-roaring start, grossing $32.2 million on Friday (including Thursday previews) and landing an A- CinemaScore from audience exit polling. Per the Hollywood Reporter, "Twisters" is now on track for a $74.6 million opening weekend, but it wouldn't be at all surprising to see it climb higher.

David Corenswet is about to become a massive movie star. The "Pearl" and "The Greatest Hits" actor is about to be Clark Kent in director James Gunn's "Superman," which is due to hit theaters next summer. We recently got a look at Corenswet suited up as Superman and it instantly took him to another level of stardom. Before he makes his mark on the DC Universe, he's starring in another big blockbuster in the form of "Twisters." Serving as a standalone sequel to the 1996 classic blockbuster "Twister," it's one of the biggest movies of summer 2024.
Directed by Lee Isaac Chung ("Minari"), on paper, "Twisters" couldn't be more different than "Superman." One deals with exaggerated versions of natural disasters, while the other is a superhero movie centered on otherworldly beings. However, as Chung recently explained to The Hollywood Reporter, Corenswet did bring a little bit of Supes with him to this film's set.

The summer box office has rebounded in recent weeks thanks to the blockbuster success of animated movies like "Despicable Me 4" and Pixar's "Inside Out 2," which is already one of the highest-grossing movies of all time. We also had a blockbuster horror breakout in the form of "A Quiet Place: Day One." But has the time come for an old-school blockbuster to become a theatrical hit? If the early numbers are any indication, it appears as though "Twisters" will indeed keep the hot streak alive as the disaster flick figures to get off to a promising start.
"Twisters" is currently eyeing an opening weekend between $40 and $55 million domestically when it arrives next weekend, per The Hollywood Reporter. That said, tracking from other outlets suggests that is a modest number even on the high end. Box Office Theory has the film taking in anywhere between $71 and $83 million in its debut.

Survivor 46 featured a very polarizing character in Liz Wilcox.
Many soundbites came from Liz, most notably when she got upset for not being invited to enjoy Applebee’s food as a challenge reward.
Liz also frequently spoke about her allergies during Survivor confessionals and how that made the game difficult.
Liz made it to the final four in Fiji despite any disadvantages she was experiencing from the food situation.
Had Liz won that final Immunity Challenge instead of Ben Katz, it may have completely changed what happened with the jury votes.
As it turned out, Liz lost the Fire-Making Challenge to Kenzie Petty, giving Kenzie an additional accomplishment on her resume that the jurors loved.

Here are 6 thriller gems of the past 4 years you need to discover, according to Reddit.
Society of the Snow (2023)
Based on the true story of the Uruguayan rugby team whose plane crashed right in the Andes back in 1972, this must-see film is so convincing that it feels like a documentary, yet unnerving enough to get you fully immersed in this survival tale.
Fresh (2022)
Next is an emotional roller coaster of a thriller that centers on a woman who goes on a romantic weekend getaway with a mysterious man, only to realize he has darker motifs behind it. Daisy Edgar-Jones and Sebastian Stan’s performances are top-notch here.

Many of us were worried about how Disney’s new Star Wars show, The Acolyte, would turn out. It was a controversial project even before it premiered, as people weren’t sure how it would be received. The creators announced it as the “gayest Star Wars” project to date, which angered many fans who felt Disney was prioritizing an agenda over the story.
Now that the series has premiered, it seems The Acolyte is becoming one of the better Star Wars shows. In our earlier report, we said The Acolyte wasn’t perfect but had a lot of potential, which was the general opinion at the time. Initially, it received a ‘Certified Fresh’ rating of 88%, but it has now improved to 91%. This suggests that the 31% audience rating might be due to review bombing, as we suspected.
Here’s how critics are describing the series on Rotten Tomatoes: “Taking fresh...

Sebastian Stan is no stranger to governmental subterfuge on screen. In fact, a decade ago he was causing international incidents in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, caught up in a conspiracy that went all the way to the top. But for his next role – firmly away from the MCU – he’s playing a guy who was at the very top for four long years. Yes, in Ali Abbasi’s The Apprentice, Stan will be playing a young Donald Trump – and the film has just unveiled a first-look image, which you can see above.
We know – it’s upsetting to see someone as likeable on-screen as Sebastian Stan playing someone as [Redacted] as Donald J. Trump. Frankly, we’d sooner be mates with his cannibalistic killer from 2022’s Fresh. Starring alongside Stan in The Apprentice are Jeremy Strong as Roy Cohn (also seen in the image), with Tenet’s Martin Donovan as the elder Fred Trump,...

Forgive the broadness of this Generation X boast, but the ‘90s were just different. Were they a simpler time? Perhaps. Were they a better time? Objectively yes, absolutely. At least in terms of pop culture, and again … that’s not really up for debate, that’s just a fact! At the very least, television was objectively stellar in the 1990s.
If that weren’t the case, then why is Friends one of the most streamed shows for teens recently? Why has the Fresh Prince reimagining worked? And most importantly: why is the greatest Saturday morning cartoon of all time making a Disney-fied comeback in X-Men ‘97?
X-Men: The Animated Series (1992-1997) was one of the strongest entries in the history of comic book adaptations simply because it was a rare mix of solid animation (for at least four of those seasons), brilliant storytelling (being able to pull from 30 years of...

On Valentine’s Day, we get reminded of the reassuring phrase, “There is someone out there for everyone.” Well, when it comes to movies, the same is true: For every film, there’s at least some who genuinely like it — even Madame Web, which opened nationally on the romantic holiday to scathing reviews and a modest box office.
So while critics and superhero fans online continue to pile on (including The Hollywood Reporter … and perhaps too much), and in the spirit of showing a little love, we sifted through the 21 positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes (where the film currently sits at 13 percent “Fresh”) to get some alternative opinions about the Sony-Marvel title, which stars Dakota Johnson as a New York paramedic who develops psychic powers.
It’s worth remembering even truly disastrous films can entertain — Paul Verhoeven’s much-derided 1995 film Showgirls, for example, is famously hilarious when viewed as an unintended comedy.

Fresh Air radio co-host Tonya Mosley is set to launch the She Has a Name podcast next month, about a young Detroit mother lost amid that city’s economic collapse and crack cocaine epidemic.
The 10-part documentary podcast from Apm Studios will kick off March 28. Mosley, who grew up in Detroit in the 1980s and ’90s and is now co-host of Fresh Air With Terry Gross and Tonya Mosley, is joined by her nephew, Antonio Wiley, to tell a story of family disconnection and healing.
The origins of the podcast, which blends investigative journalism and memoir, came in 1987 when Detroit firefighters discovered the remains of an unidentified young woman in a vacant house deliberately set on fire.
Buried in a cemetery as “Unknown Woman 1987,” it took a DNA program 30 years later to identify the young woman’s remains as those of Anita — the mother of Antonio Wiley and the sister...

It’s the battle of the TV Cromwells! On BBC One later this year, Mark Rylance returns in the role of Henry VIII’s right hand man in series two of Wolf Hall, adapted from Dame Hilary Mantel’s acclaimed novels. But before then, Sean Bean will play Thomas Cromwell in Disney+ British historical crime mystery Shardlake.
(Incidentally, if Bean wanted to dispel his reputation for playing characters who meet sticky, early ends, then his agent may want to get their head in a history book before forwarding the next script…)
Thomas Cromwell is a supporting role in Shardlake, a new four-part series adapted from the first in C.J Sansom’s successful mystery novels about Matthew Shardlake, a 16th century lawyer born with what would now be understood as scoliosis, and who investigates murder mysteries for the Crown.
Working for Cromwell, Shardlake must navigate the dangers of his powerful boss...

The Sundance Film Festival on Sunday night hosted the world premiere of Aaron Schimberg’s A Different Man starring Sebastian Stan, Adam Pearson and The Worst Person in the World breakout Renate Reinsve in her first American film.
Stan toplines the A24 release as an aspiring actor, Edward, who undergoes a radical medical procedure to drastically transform his appearance. But a new face turns into a nightmare when it causes him to lose a dream role he was born to play when the playwright/object of his affections, Reinsve, replaces him with someone who looks nearly identical to his former self, Pearson, a man with a disfigured face.
As for Pearson, he lives with neurofibromatosis (type 1), a rare genetic condition that causes excess body tissue to grow predominantly on his face. The condition fuels the plot of A Different Man and the actor, Pearson, actually inspired the film after having...

In a cinematic landscape filled with talent, certain performances stand out. From the quiet intensity of Greta Lee in Past Lives to the commanding presence of Taraji P. Henson in The Color Purple, this collection of actors make up some of my favorite performances of the year of films I saw. Each actor brings a unique energy and emotional depth to their roles to not only define their characters but elevate them.
These are not in any particular order.
Greta Lee & Teo Yoo, Past Lives
Lee beautifully navigates the delicate emotional journey put forth in Celine Song’s script. She embodies Nora’s quiet longing with a subtlety, her expressive eyes and gentle smile hinting at the depths of unsaid feelings. When faced with the ghosts of the yesterday, Lee unleashes a rawness that both devastates and resonates, reminding us of the vulnerability it takes to confront the paths not taken.
