Synopsis

  • My sister needs to talk.

    -----

Jackson and woman Sofia swing two girls on a park swingset. There's the sound of a car crash, and the girls turn into the long-dead corpses of his parents. The woman's eyes bleed and then sprout black bugs...

... and Jackson wakes up as his alarm goes off. His partner Reza asks Jackson if he had a nightmare, and Jackson apologizes for waking him up. Reza wonders if the dream was about Jackson's parents, and Jackson insists that it was just a dream. Jackson's lover tells him that the anniversary of his parents' deaths is that weekend, and Jackson says that Sofia was there as well. Reza suggests that Jackson reconnect with his sister, but Jackson says that he couldn't take her drinking and drugs. He points out that Sofia's apartment is only 10 minutes away, and Jackson could get breakfast and break the ice with her. Jackson says Sofia will be up at their family cabin, and that she goes there every anniversary. Undeterred, Reza tells him that he has a long drive ahead of him.

Later, Jackson drives to the cabin and goes in. He hears a noise upstairs, and calls to Sofia. Going up the stairs to investigate, Jackson goes into a room and follows a voice talking, and finds a TV turned to a shopping channel. He turns off the TV and Sofia, sitting on a nearby couch, greets him.

Sofia goes down to the kitchen and masks tea, and Jackson follows her. He says that he didn't think she should be alone, and he apologizes for not seeing her in nine months. Sofia asks if he's forgiven him for selling their father's pocket watch, and Jackson snaps at her saying that she knew how much the watch meant to him and that their father left it to him. Jackson then apologizes, saying he's been praying for more forgiveness.

Jackson asks if Sofia is using again, and she figures that's why Jackson is really there: to check up on her. She insists that she's never been more sober in her life, and there's more than one way to take away pain. Jackson sarcastically holds up the cross on his necklace and says that it belonged to their father, and he should be glad Sofia didn't sell it as well.

Sofia figures that Jackson will never see her anything other than a mess, calls him a hypocrite, and walks away Jackson goes to his childhood dresser, finds his old Bible, and then finds an old book with a reversed cross on the cover and drawings of demons inside. Sofia knocks on the bedroom door, startling him and making him drop the book. Jackson opens the door and asks Sofia to let him help her.

Sofia smiles at the idea, walks into the room, and sees the book. She picks it up and says that she found someone who gives her everything she needs. Sofia gives the book to Jackson and says that maybe He can help Jackson. She says that Jackson is always talking about her and they should talk about him. Jackson figures that "He" is bad news.

Later, Jackson calls Reza and tells him what he's found. He figures it's more than just Sofia has a new boyfriend, and they wonder if Sofia joined a cult. Reza assures Jackson that he'll figure it out, and Jackson hangs up. Jackson looks at his face in the mirror and remembers seeing Sofia's bleeding eyes in the dream. Jackson goes to take a shower, and blood starts coming out of the sprayhead. He shuts off the water and gets out of the shower stall, and realizes the blood is gone if it was ever there.

Going back downstairs, Jackson calls to Sofia and hears her in her room talking to a man with a deep voice. The door is locked, and Sofia promises the man that she'll do it. Sofia screams and Jackson breaks down the door, and finds a broken mirror on the floor and a sigil painted on the ceiling. He passes out, and a shadowy figure materializes, pulls Jackson the rest of the way into the room, and slams the door shut.

The next morning, Jackson wakes up in the kitchen and sits up. Sofia is at the counter making food, and tells Jackson that when their parents died, she did everything she could to feel better. Jackson asks her what happened, and Sofia tells him that she eventually found the Children of Flotos. Her brother remembers the demon that they told the children about in church, and Sofia says that there have been many lies said about the demon. She tells Jackson that Flotos shows the truth to his followers. She raises a spoonful of maggots from the bowl that she's stirring and eats them, and tells Jackson that thanks to Flotos, she feels no pain and Flotos took care of it all.

Jackson asks Sofia what she's done, and she tells him that he's in as much pain as she used to be. She says that Flotos can take care of Jackson's pain... if he lets him in. She holds up the spoonful of maggots up to Jackson's mouth, and he slaps the spoon away, grabs her wrist, and drags her to the door. As Sofia laughs, the door locks apparently by itself. Sofia's eyes turn solid white, and she breaks his hand.

Jackson runs into a room and closes the door behind him, and Sofia pounds on the other side and tells Jackson that he can't get past his pain or even confront it. Memories of Jackson's dreams go through his mind, and Sofia says that she doesn't know what's happening. She asks Jackson for help, and he opens the door to find her sitting in the hallway, crying. Jackson tells Sofia that is isn't the answer and asks her to let him help her, and Sofia asks if he'll help her like he did before.

Shaking his head, Jackson says that he didn't think things were that bad and thought Sofia was doing okay. She takes her hand, twists the wrists, and looks up, her eyes still solid white. Sofia tells him to stop pretending and shoves him away.

Later, Jackson wakes up in a room filled with candles. Sofia comes down the stairs and says that she was hoping he'd come around on his own but got tired of waiting. She yanks the cross from around his neck, throws it across the floor, and then throws Jackson across the floor. A wind comes up and Sofia tells Jackson to let Flotos in.

Jackson grabs the cross and recites part of the Lord's Prayer. He shoves the cross onto Sofia's shoulder, and it burns her flesh. Sofia screams as Flotos leaves her, and her eyes revert to normal. She collapse from the strain and Jackson drops to the floor and cradles her in his arms.

The next day, Sofia wakes up on the couch and finds Jackson daubing at her brow with a wet cloth. She apologizes for what she did, and Jackson says that it's his fault for pushing her away. Sofia tells him that he had to, and admits that she's a mess. Her brother says it's his fault, and she started using heroin when she caught him using. Jackson promises that from now on he's going to be there for her and smiles, and Sofia coughs up black bugs like in Jackson's dream.

Sophia lies back on the couch, and a black moth flies out of her mouth. Jackson realizes that Flotos is still in Sophie and sobs, holding his sister close to him.

Later, Reza arrives at the cabin and comes in. He hears the TV playing and calls to Jackson, and smells something awful. He finds Jackson and a long-dead Sofia on the couch, Jackson's arm tied up to reveal a vein, and heroin on the table in front of him.

Jackson wakes up later in a hospital bed, and sees Reza discussing Jackson's case with a doctor. Reza suggests that Jackson seeing Sofia dead was too much for him and he went back to using heroin. Upon seeing that Jackson is awake, Reza comes in. Jackson asks where Sofia is, and Reza tells him that the paramedic who revived Jackson determined that Sofia had been dead a week. She OD'd,
