  • A secret government agency, led by the ruthless, high-ranking official Amanda Waller, recruits some of the most dangerous, incarcerated villains on the planet to execute dangerous black ops missions and save the world from a potentially apocalyptic threat from a mysterious, supernatural entity. If anything goes wrong on this mission, the government will not be liable but rather can place the blame on the villains, who are inherently evil people. A small bomb is implanted in each member of the squad's neck with the capability of detonating any time one of the members tries to rebel or escape. It will be up to this assembled team of villains to prevail over the seemingly impossible events that will unfold before them, in what many deem to be a "suicide mission".—Kyle Perez
  • With Superman dead, the world needs a new band of superheroes to step into the breach. Senior US Intelligence officer Amanda Waller comes up with a daring plan - use extreme criminals with special abilities to fight crime, in exchange for them receiving reduced sentences. The band of crime-fighting criminals is officially known as Task Force X, but due to the nature of their mission a more appropriate name would be Suicide Squad.—grantss
  • Fearing that the next superhero saviour will turn terrorist, Amanda Waller, a calculating Intelligence Division agent, assembles an elite force of meta-humans: the secret Task Force X. So, to do the government's dirty work, Waller hand-picks the worst of the worst from the country's maximum-security prisons--a proper circus of psychotic, antisocial supervillains kept on a short leash. Of course, if anything goes wrong, the Federals will deny everything. And then, the all-powerful Enchantress, a shape-shifting sorceress, goes rogue, bent on building a devastating machine. Now, the Suicide Squad must prepare for WWIII. However, the question remains. Is Waller's band of expendable anti-heroes humankind's only hope?—Nick Riganas

Synopsis

  • It's been months since the death of Superman (a reference to the film 'Batman vs. Superman'). Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) meets with her associates Admiral Olsen (Ted Whittall) and Dexter Tolliver (David Harbour) to discuss the organization of Task Force X, her idea of creating a team of the most dangerous criminals to combat any possible major catastrophe. Waller pulls out her files and goes through her proposed recruits.

Intelligence officer Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) assembles Task Force X, a team of dangerous criminals imprisoned at Belle Reve Prison consisting of elite hit-man Floyd Lawton / Deadshot (Will Smith), An expert marksman and assassin. A mercenary by day and a concerned father by night, Deadshot is a conflicted criminal who enjoys the hunt, but is still trying to do right by his young daughter. In a flashback, we see Deadshot preparing to take out a target. He goads his employer into doubling his pay, and Deadshot kills his target by having his bullet ricochet off a gate to strike the man. Floyd has a daughter, Zoe (Shailyn Pierre-Dixon). In another flashback, the two were walking together and discussing Zoe moving in with Floyd. Her mother wouldn't let her because they both know Floyd is a killer, though he denied it to Zoe. He was caught by Batman (Ben Affleck). Floyd got his gun and prepared to shoot Batman, but Zoe stood in the way and pleaded with him not to do it. Floyd relented and went quietly.

Former psychiatrist Dr. Harleen Quinzel / Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), A crazed super-villain and former psychiatrist to the Joker. Harley fell in love with the joker during his stint in the asylum. The Joker escaped from prison by using Harleen as a hostage. He then tortured Harleen for months until she went insane and turned her into his love slave and eventually his wife. Waller knows that Harley is even crazier and more fearless than Joker, which makes her a very valuable asset. Joker and Harley were in a nightclub where Harley was dancing. He invited her to join him and a gangster he met with named Monster T (Common). Harley offered him company, but he declined out of fear that Joker would be displeased. This got him killed. Later, Joker and Harley made their getaway but were chased by Batman in the Batmobile. The two were ran off the road and into the river. Batman jumped in and found Harley, then took her to jail.

Pyrokinetic ex-gangster Chato Santana / El Diablo (Jay Hernandez), A former Los Angeles gang member who has powers that allow him to summon flames, and transform himself into a monstrous horned demon-like entity.

Opportunistic thief Digger Harkness / Captain Boomerang (Jai Courtney), A thief who utilizes deadly boomerangs, described as rugged, unpredictable and mouthy. He was caught by The Flash (Ezra Miller).

Genetic mutation Waylon Jones / Killer Croc (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje), a super-villain who suffers from a skin condition that causes him to develop reptilian features. Croc was treated like a monster, so he acted like one and devoured anyone that crossed him. And finally specialized assassin Christopher Weiss / Slipknot (Adam Beach), a mercenary specializing in tactical grappling and scaling.

One of Waller's intended recruits is Flag's girlfriend Dr. June Moone (Cara Delevingne), an archaeologist who recently came across a cave and found an idol, releasing the spirit of a 6,000-year-old witch called Enchantress. The spirit possesses June. Waller has the heart of the Enchantress, which keeps her under control as the heart wounds her if it is struck. The Enchantress wants to steal her heart from Waller, so she can be free and unleash herself upon the world.

The chairman is not feeling the plan until Waller tells June to bring out Enchantress. She morphs into the witch and demonstrates her power (by bringing a secret file from a secured vault in Iran), with Waller poking the heart to control her, which pains Enchantress and also hurts June once she returns to normal. Waller tells the others in the room that the plan would be for her team to go out in secrecy with no word of the government's involvement, and if the villains get caught, they'll get "thrown under the bus".

They are placed under command of Colonel Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman) to be used as disposable assets in high-risk missions for the United States government. Each member has a Nano bomb implanted in their neck, designed to detonate should any member rebel or try to escape. The team will be used to combat meta-human threats and if successful, they will have their sentences shortened.

Tatsu Yamashiro / Katana (Karen Fukuhara) is A volunteer heroic member of the Task Force X, who acts as Rick Flag's bodyguard. She is a widowed expert martial artist and swords-woman. Katana mourns her husband's death and wields the Soultaker Blade, a mystical weapon capable of trapping the souls of its victims.

Enchantress quickly turns on Waller, deciding to eradicate humankind with a mystical weapon, in direct revenge for imprisoning her. At night, June morphs into Enchantress. Enchantress then Teleports to Waller's home and finds an idol that contains the spirit of her brother, Incubus. She takes the idol and heads to the Midway City train station and finds a commuter (Alain Chanoine) and uses his body to bring Incubus back to life. Reunited, the two discuss Enchantress's plan to create a machine to wipe out humanity. Incubus, still in the commuter's body, kills three men on the tracks before taking his true form and causing destruction.

She besieges Midway City by transforming its populace into a horde of monsters. Waller then deploys the squad to extract a high-profile mark from Midway, which is reported to be under a terrorist attack.

Waller is alerted to the chaos and decides it's time to activate Task Force X. They are brought to a base where they are briefed on their mission, which is to head into Midway City and retrieve a mark. When Flag tells the villains about their set-up, Floyd refers to them as a "Suicide Squad". They are given proper outfits and their own weapons to head into battle.

Harley's homicidal lover, the Joker (Jared Leto), a psychopathic super-villain, finds out about her predicament and tortures Belle Reve Security Officer Griggs (Ike Barinholtz) into leading him to the facility where the Nano bombs are made. There, he blackmails one of the program's scientists into disabling Harley's bomb.

On approach, the squad's helicopter is shot down, forcing them to proceed on foot to their target. Boomerang then convinces Slipknot that the bombs are a ruse to keep them in check. Slipknot attempts to escape and is killed via his Nano bomb, while the squad is attacked by Enchantress' minions. Deadshot hits every target, Harley shoots and whacks the minions with her baseball bat, Katana slices them with her sword, and Boomerang uses his weapon, but Diablo sits this one out. Flag is grabbed by the minions, and Harley almost lets him die, but Deadshot reminds her that if he dies, then they all die. She reluctantly saves Flag and kills the minions.

Flag leads the squad to a building to find their mark. Harley takes an elevator and is attacked by more minions. She easily kills them before rejoining the squad. More minions attack them, so Deadshot pushes Diablo into unleashing the full might of his fire powers. Diablo incinerates all the minions with one blast. They eventually manage to fight their way through to a safe room, where they learn that their mark is Waller herself, who is attempting to cover up her involvement in Enchantress' siege.

The squad escorts Waller to a rooftop for extraction, but the arriving helicopter has been hijacked by the Joker and his men, who open fire on the squad while Harley climbs aboard. Waller orders Deadshot to shoot her down with the promise of custody of his daughter. Deadshot shoots but intentionally misses Harley. Waller then orders her men to shoot the chopper down. Harley falls out of the chopper and lands on a rooftop, and she watches as Joker goes down with the chopper.

Alerted to Waller's whereabouts, Enchantress' minions arrive and kidnap her. Enchantress's brother retrieves her heart from Waller's possession & unites it with Enchantress's body. Harley rejoins the squad when they come across her on their path.

Deadshot finds Waller's confidential files and learns the truth about Enchantress and Flag's relationship with Moone. Flag is then forced to confess the truth, causing the squad members to abandon him. With Waller compromised, Flag relieves the squad of the mission but chooses to continue himself. The team abandon Flag, sharing a drink in an abandoned bar, where El Diablo reveals his powers and criminal lifestyle led to the deaths of his family. Flag relieves the squad of their mission, but realizing they have the opportunity to prove themselves, the group set out to save the city.

They soon rejoin Flag and locate Enchantress at a partially flooded subway station. Killer Croc and a group of Navy SEALs, led by Lieutenant GQ Edwards (Scott Eastwood), go underwater to plant a bomb underneath her brother. El Diablo embraces his abilities and manages to hold Incubus down long enough for the bomb to detonate underneath, killing them both as well as Edwards.

The remaining squad members battle Enchantress together but are ultimately defeated. Enchantress offers to fulfill their deepest desires in exchange for their allegiance, and Harley feigns interest in order to get close enough to cut out Enchantress's heart. Killer Croc then throws explosives into Enchantress' weapon and Deadshot shoots them, destroying the device. Flag takes Enchantress's heart and crushes it, finally freeing June from the curse.

Waller, still alive, emerges, and the squad members are returned to Belle Reve with ten years off their sentences. All but Captain Boomerang are allowed special privileges. The Joker, who survived the crash, breaks into the penitentiary and reunites with Harley.

Waller meets with Bruce Wayne, who agrees to protect her from the legal consequences of the events in Midway City in exchange for government files on the growing meta-human community. He reveals his plans to contact the heroes in the file, including Flash and Aquaman, in order to build his own superhero team. She advises him to stop working late nights, implying she knows Bruce is Batman. In response, he tells Waller to shut down Task Force X or he and his "friends" will do it for her.
