If I had to describe this season in one word it word be: meh! I'm not sure what the writers were thinking but the stories were too messy and unconvincing.
I was mainly disappointed with the stories of Mike and Susan. First, we watched them break up and get back together too many times. I was actually looking forward to seeing them as a happy married couple. They can have problems like every other couple but after several seasons of being on and off I wasn't expecting to see them divorced. It was a big letdown for me. Second, the reason for the divorce was also stupid. Getting married is supposed to be "for better and for worse" so I see no reason why they need to break up after a car accident that wasn't even their fault. Sure it was a terrible fetal car accident but Mike knows how it feels to be responsible for another person's death so he should have been able to help Susan cope with her guilt and grief. I also thought it was absolutely moronic that they lied to the cops about who was driving because Susan forgot her drivers license at home. What a stupid reason! Not to mention that the cops can very easily figure out who was driving just by looking at the medical reports. The seat belts leave distinctive marks that easily show who was sitting where. Not to mention that you got blood and other physical evidence at the scene. Plus, why lie? They were involved in a car accident that killed a mother and a young child and they are worried about what? Getting a ticket for leaving your driver's license at home? It's moronic and frankly it's bad writing!
I also did not like the Mike-Katherine relationship. It didn't feel right and it was clear from the start that it wouldn't last.
As for Dave Dash, his story was sort of a mishmash of stories that didn't make much sense. It's understandable that he would have a nervous breakdown and would even want revenge but why was he treated by a psychiatrist that was specializing in the criminally insane? Shouldn't he have done something criminal first? And although I'm not a psychiatrist I'm pretty sure that the criminally insane are those who aren't aware of what they are doing. What was Dave? He clearly knew what he was doing but was also sometimes suffering from hallucinations. So he was crazy but not really. Although, to be honest, I was more bothered by how stupid were his plans. He wanted revenge but without getting caught? Weird form of revenge if you ask me. Isn't the whole idea behind revenge is to make someone pay for what they did? Shouldn't they know why they are suffering? His final plan of killing MJ was also stupid. Why bother taking them to a lake and drowning MJ in a pretend accident if you are going to leave behind a tape? Just go a put a bullet in his head. Why go through all the trouble of convincing Susan to go and driving there. Knock on the door and shoot them in their house. Nothing about the Dash story felt right to me.
I also didn't like it that the one character that suspected Dave from the start wasn't on to him the entire season. I'm talking about Karen. The story started with her, continued with her sister and then stopped for half a season until they broke into his house in the final. I like Karen so I was happy to see her going head to head with Dave but the writers kinda stopped the storyline mid season.
Oh, and on top of all that the writers decided to kill Edie. The one character in the show that shoved the truth to the faces of the main characters who are more often than not hypocritical and fake. Big mistake!
Lastly, the cliffhanger at the end wasn't really suspenseful since it was obvious Mike was remarrying Susan.
So all in all, both the final and this whole was just one big meh.
