NCIS Gibbs' Rule #91: When You Decide To Walk Away, Never Look Back.
Gibbs' finished boat is a Glen-L Barrelback. It is built from plans and patterns supplied by the company.
Gibb's latest rule, #91 "when you walk away, don't look back", is similar to a motto used in a real life U.S. Navy tradition. The tradition is in regards to a captain leaving their ship for the final time, either because they have retired from the Navy or been promoted and received a new assignment. When the captain leaves the ship for the final time the crew lines up on the deck in full dress whites and salutes their captain one last time as he/she departs. Then the captain stands at attention in front of his/her executive officer and asks "permission to disembark the ship for the final time" with the XO replying "permission granted captain, may your journey have fair winds and following seas", then CO and XO salute each other one final time. As the captain turns to disembark the XO shouts the traditional "hip-hip!" with the crew shouting "hooray!" three times. Then as the captain steps off the ship and onto the gangplank the XO shouts "Don't look back!", which encourages the captain to move ahead with confidence and not have any regrets. This tradition has also come to be used for any officer who has reached retirement age and is done when they leave their ship/base for the final time.
