Captain America: The Winter Soldier was always going to be an intriguing entry in Marvel’s Phase 2. Whereas the Thor and Iron Man sequels delve deeper into the worlds introduced in the kickoff entry of those sub-franchises, Winter Soldier looks nothing like the original Captain America. Cap’s first movie was set in Joe Johnston’s 1940s, a propaganda-poster retro-world filled with gruff Army colonels and sneering Nazis. Winter Soldier finds Cap entrenched in the modern age — a man out of his own time. As a result, the trailer for Winter Soldier isn’t just a first look at Cap...

First up, you should probably plan your lunch break around Days of Our Lives, because something gay is happening, and our own snicks will be liveblogging the action today and tomorrow.
Very sad, news. Director Tony Scott apparently committed suicide last night by jumping off an L.A. bridge. The younger brother of Ridley, Tony Scott scored a number of number of movie hits, including Top Gun, Beverly Hills Cop 2 and most recently Unstoppable in 2010. In recent years Scott had ventured into TV producing (He was an Ep on The Good Wife.)
In a moment of gross stupidity, Congressman Todd Akin, who is running against Senator Claire McCaskill for her Senate seat, said “From what I understand from doctors… if it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.” Akin has since said he "misspoke" but still doesn't support abortion in cases of rape,...

Making lists is not my favorite occupation. They inevitably inspire only reader complaints. Not once have I ever heard from a reader that my list was just fine, and they liked it. Yet an annual Best Ten list is apparently a statutory obligation for movie critics.
My best guess is that between six and ten of these movies won't be familiar. Those are the most useful titles for you, instead of an ordering of movies you already know all about.
One recent year I committed the outrage of listing 20 movies in alphabetical order. What an uproar! Here are my top 20 films, in order of approximate preference.
1. "A Separation"
This Iranian film won't open in Chicago until Jan. 27. It won the Golden Bear at Berlin and was just named the year's best foreign film by the New York Film Critics Circle. It is specifically Iranian, but I believe the more specific...

Super-stardom always looks so inevitable in retrospect: of course Ryan Gosling would make a name for himself in well-received indie movies like Lars and the Real Girl and Blue Valentine, while also finding popular success in movies like The Notebook and Crazy, Stupid, Love.
And with looks like Chris Evans', it was surely only a matter of time until he'd find a vehicle like Captain America that would give him the lead in a movie that's a big fat hit.
But is that true? Once you each a certain level and generate the "right" kind of buzz, is super-stardom inevitable?
As near as I can tell, Hollywood is still basically playing by the "three-flops-and-you're-out" rule: after a leading actor's breakthrough success, he gets about three more roles to prove himself.
If these movies flop, and if their name recognition is still high enough because of that initial break-through, they...

We’ve received all the covers for DC Comics August solicitations, and Flashpoint promises that worlds will live, worlds will die, and the DC Universe will never be the sa– oh, sorry, that was the tagline for Crisis On Infinite Earths, back when I worked at Flashpoint. I’m so confused…
My favorite item for the month is pictured above, the Sergio Aragones version of Batman from Batman: Black & White. But there are some absolute art gems here, including Darwyn Cooke’s Jsa cover, and Frank Quitely’s redoing of Gil Kane and Murphy Anderson’s cover for Green Lantern #52.
As for the rest of the books, take a look… as usual, spoilers ahead:
War Of The Green Lanterns Aftermath #2

Inception star Joseph Gordon-Levitt is in talks to reunite with Christopher Nolan for the director’s third and final Batman film, The Dark Knight Rises.
It’s unclear what role Gordon-Levitt will play in the film, though he has been rumored in connection with the threequel since last summer. However, Nolan struck down Internet rumors that the Riddler would appear in the film, as well as any notion that the Joker would make a return without the late Heath Ledger. The oft-rumored Hugo Strange is also a possibility, though details of the character’s involvement are pure speculation at this point.
Anne Hathaway has already been confirmed as Selina Kyle (a.k.a. Catwoman) and Gordon-Levitt’s Inception co-star Tom Hardy is playing the musclebound baddie Bane. A third villain isn’t out of the question, but would certainly complicate the plot as Nolan is building to a finale.
Another option would be Dick Grayson,...

Preface - This recap took me days to do. I kept getting off a geeky research girl tangents. Good news - I may now be the leading expert on season 2 coffee mugs. Bad news - no one cares and I still don't know what Ivan Bliminse has to do with the invisible man. Anyone know? Welcome back to White Collar! January never looked so good.
Previously - Kate died, the music box hid a code, Neal pulled a gun on Fowler, Fowler knew Burke's mystery man (Julian Larssen), and Mozzie got shot! Aaahhh! Why cliffhang me like that writers? Why?
We open as Mozzie is rushed into surgery. He flat lines but is brought back. Yes, I panicked even though I knew he would be okay. Neal's at Mozzie's side while Peter exposits that Mozzie is "in a medically induced coma. There's nothing you can do for him here; there's...
