- Out for a walk along the waterfront during their first official date, Jeff and Zee come across what appears at first glance to be a young woman in distress - her body steps away from her still running moped - but who Zee confirms is already deceased, what on the surface appears to be a possible heart attack. Jeff recognizes her as Katie Leonard, a waitress at the Beach House Restaurant, she, in seeing his name in the media as a consultant to Vineyard PD, who approached him earlier that day in asking for help concerning an undisclosed matter she implying of a criminal nature which she got involved in and was now in above her head, Jeff in turn telling her to go to the police which she never ended up doing. In conducting the autopsy, Zee discovers that Katie was poisoned, turning the investigation into a probable murder. Two quick suspects are Glen Eads, her ex-con ex-boyfriend who until recently also worked at the restaurant, and retired Greek philosophy professor turned horticulturalist Marty Cline, who Katie assisted on the side, both men who Jeff and Zee know are hiding something upon questioning. Making the situation more complex is that Jeff and Zee know that the murder has something to do with an approximate $100,000 positive discrepancy in Zee's account at the Vineyard Island Bank, a family owned and run business now led by Lauren Cabot, her brother, Noah Cabot who owns the Beach House. On the personal side, Zee wants to take things slow with Jeff due to his closed nature, while Jeff additionally learns second-hand from Jackie that his former colleagues at the Boston PD may have a lead on the incident that led to his shooting, such information which has not been relayed to him directly from them.—Huggo
