Enter the world of manga artist group Clamp this summer in Tokyo, as the National Art Center launches a massive exhibition celebrating their work and worldview. The event, which was officially announced earlier this month, is revealing more about what to expect in the lead-up to its debut. The exhibition was originally planned to have five sections, each addressing a different aspect of the artists' work: Color, Love, Adventure, Magic, and Phrase. Two new areas—Imagination and Dream—will round out the exhibition. Imagination will delve into the group's 35-year history, exploring media outside manga including books, magazines, and character art. And Dream will be the final area of the exhibition, featuring brand new full-color art by the group. Pied Piper of Hamelin, by Brothers Grimm, originally a Germanic folk tale, was either way supposed to be a harrowing story about honesty and integrity, but The Grimm Variations presents a darker rendition that resonates with us even in modern times. Episode 6 is a testament to the dual nature of traditional morality and strikes as a bold commentary on gender roles and freedom in an authoritarian system. The previous week, I had a conversation with an elderly gentleman who thought our generation lives in a utopian fantasy and is more into idealism than practicality. While I might disagree with what he had to say, for some strange reason, the story of Maria in this authoritarian village reminds me of my conversation with this man.

The picturesque animation of Jacob and Wilhelm seeing their little sister play with dolls marks the beginning of a classic folktale based on siblings. In this variation, Hansel and Gretel are students at a school, and the witch doesn’t want to eat them and turns out to be a good woman. Nonetheless, she still offers them her confections, so that should be enough information for you before I jump in to discuss the third episode of The Grimm Variations.

How do Hansel and Gretel come across the witch?
Hansel and Gretel live and study in a private school run by a couple whom the kids address as Papa and Mama. The couple seems to take good care of the kids while also instilling manners and discipline in them at the same time. The kids have a set routine, which includes waking up, going to the cafeteria for breakfast,...

Netflix’s The Grimm Variations brings back the folk tales by the Brothers Grimm. This episode takes inspiration from Town Musicians of Bremen and gives it a dark twist. Inclining towards the anime aspect of this modern rendition, this episode takes place in a cyberpunk kind of Wild West featuring anachronistically futuristic cowboys. The story hints at different themes, such as striking unlikely friendships, isolation, and oppression.

In the second episode of Netflix’s The Grimm Variations, a cautionary folktale is turned upside down. The red cloak is turned in for a red hoodie, and Little Red Riding Hood is back in a dystopian world. The makers of this show really deserve a round of applause for the Uno reverses they keep pulling out.

Netflix’s The Grimm Variations gives an anime twist to stories by The Brothers Grimm. Most of us have grown up hearing or watching these stories through different renditions; however, this Netflix adaptation gives it another layer of intrigue with its own plot inspired by the original Grimm stories. This episode of The Grimm Variations is inspired by ‘The Elves and the Shoemaker.’ The original story was supposed to be about gratefulness, but this rendition takes a dark turn instead with Mr. N’s struggle with perfectionism and selfishness.
Mr. N is a run-down novelist, a bygone in the literary world. He published his last book, Asking at Midnight, nearly 20 years ago. The success of this book made people refer to him as the wonder boy, but it’s a thing of the past now. In the present day, Mr. N, a middle-aged man, has turned into a hikikomori. He...

You know how the petrichor soothes the mind and soul after a dry and hot summer day? Well, this is how the new Netflix anthology series The Grimm Variations introduces itself in the first episode, titled Cinderella. Based on the classic folktales of the Brothers Grimm, this series takes the innocence out of the folktales and replaces it with dark, depressing outcomes. Disney won’t be very happy now, I assume. The brothers Wilhelm and Jacob narrate the tales to their little sister Charlotte as she eagerly waits for the twists and turns that are about to come.

Netflix has a lot of hot picks this month, with the biggest being the second part of Zack Snyder’s epic space opera Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver. The rebel warriors of Veldt prepare to face off against the might of the Motherworld, willing to risk it all to defend their home. Sofia Boutella returns as the titular Scargiver, Kora, and she is once again joined by Ed Skrein, Michiel Huisman, and Djimon Hounsou.
For those who want a little spookiness this spring, Train to Busan director Yeon Sang-ho’s next project, Parasyte: The Grey hits Netflix this month, as does the next entry in the Sandman universe, Dead Boy Detectives. Parasyte: The Grey follows an outbreak of an unknown alien parasite that can pass as their human hosts and infiltrate society – think Invasion of the Body Snatchers, but with more gore.

There’s a compelling idea in anthropology that many ancient werewolf legends are derived from our species’ need to rationalize the more animalistic side of humanity – which is why lycanthropy has historically been used to explain everything from medieval serial killers to cannibalism. While I personally think there’s a lot more to unpack when it comes to tales of wolfmen and women, this is still a great example of why so many of our most enduring fairy tales involve big bad wolves.
And in the world of film, I think there’s only one feature that really nails the folkloric origins of werewolf stories, namely Neil Jordan’s 1984 fairy-tale horror classic, The Company of Wolves. Even four decades later, there’s no other genre flick that comes close to capturing the dreamlike ambience behind this strange anthology, and that’s why I’d like to take this opportunity to...
