Insidious

FAQ

According to IMDb, Amazon, Wikipedia, and further Google searching, the only version in existence is the theater version.

In the movie "Insidious," the family members seen as dead (the whistling dad, the mother and ironing woman, and the young woman who is shot) are not a family who was murdered in the first house. They are actually spirits that are haunting the new home of the protagonist family, the Lambert's. These spirits are known as "The Lipstick-Face Demon" and his victims. The Lipstick-Face Demon is a malevolent supernatural entity that is able to possess the living and the dead. The spirits of the family members are trapped in the Further, a dark parallel dimension that is home to lost souls and evil spirits, and they are being controlled by the demon. The demon is able to use these spirits to torment the Lambert family and try to claim their youngest child, Dalton, as his own.

Eight-year-old Dalton Lambert (Ty Simpkins) suddenly and inexplicably slips into a coma. When his parents, Renai (Rose Byrne) and Josh (Patrick Wilson) get no answers from the medical profession they turn to spiritualist Elise Rainier (Lin Shaye) who says that Dalton has astral projected too far into other dimensions and that his spirit is now trapped in a place called "the Further". Meanwhile, a demon with "fire on his face" and several ghosts are vying for a chance to possess the empty shell of Dalton's body.

Insidious is based on an original screenplay by Australian screenwriter Leigh Whannell. It was followed by Insidious: Chapter 2 (2013) and Insidious: Chapter 3 (2015).

The title "Insidious" is an adjective that means "proceeding in a gradual, subtle way, but with harmful effects" or "intending to trap or deceive." The word itself comes from the Latin word "insidiosus" which means "treacherous" or "guileful."

In the context of the film, the title could be interpreted as a warning about the gradual, subtle and deceptive nature of the supernatural entities that haunt the family and their home. These entities are insidious, as they slowly and quietly infiltrate the family's lives, causing harm in a subtle and gradual way. The title also serves as a warning of the danger of the entities, as they are not visible, but they are there and waiting to harm the family.
