Young Adults are not stupid.

A decent budget has clearly been wasted on a terrible story with a great premise. The script is so patronizing to the target audience with all the cliche high school characters and hackneyed villains. These people have been chosen for a mission crucial to humanity's survival and were selected from hundreds of thousands of applicants and passed rigorous testing and training and yet they behave like naughty brats in the schoolyard. It reminds me of the mass produced flash cartoons of the 2000's.

A lost opportunity for the show creators who went for a committee designed, safe option, resulting in something that watches like you've already seen it and were not impressed the first time.

The Martian, but for morons

At least that's what it feels like, 15 minutes into the first episode. Anyone looking for the next Expanse or For All Mankind will likely be disappointed. As for plot and characters, cliche-riddled doesn't even begin to describe it. I really don't want to waste any more time reviewing it but I'm short of characters so I'll send out a plea- why doesn't anyone start with some solid material? Where is my Cyteen/company wars/merchanters series? Why can't anyone remake The Lathe of Heaven that does the source material justice? Uplift wars? Well of Souls? Hee Chee and the event horizon? Rendezvous with Rama? The Incal? And then the powers that be cancel Pantheon.

I am not alone!!

First off - I was REALLY looking forward to this show for a long time. I watched a bit of it ........ And then a bit more - and finally put on the mute button to read the reviews. And I thought, oh my God, am I going to be the only person who thinks this sucks pond water?

Nope.

The one thing no one else addressed that caught my eye as ludicrous was their 'meal plan' - putting a small, beautifully embossed box, on a full size tray that you'd find in a school cafeteria for a meal. I had to check it out a couple of times to make sure it was a dumb as I thought. It was.

If there is a theme to this program it is exactly that - things are so flagrantly Dumb.

I'm not, so won't be watching anymore of this sad show.

I waited for This?

This show is worse than the first season on LEXX or Tales from a Parallel Universe. The "actors & actresses" are like the HS theater club kids who go on stage and pretend to be trees and then cry about it because the students that watched the play 'didn't understand our talents'. The compression suits worn by these colonists teens have hood helmets that hold pressure? Come on? It's like wrapping a person in aluminum foil and proclaiming he's now a state of the art cyborg? Huge open decks full of cryo-beds and they gripe about wasted space for storage? Rooms and corridors are wider than the ones on the Enterprise D and Discovery? Rationed foods are prepackaged little cubes of cookie in cardboard that is waste packaging? Crew quarters are huge without storage in the room because they have rows of lockers with the colonists personal items stored away so they can be tampered with later or used to frame the curly haired girl who doesnt shut up? The girl in charge has a room with a queen sized bed in it? She wasn't in charge before the Event happened? Was this her room assigned to her before the adult captain died? This isnt the captains room she just moved into is it? Do any of the writers know anything about the genre of space travel TV shows? Cancel season 2. Cancel episode 2 for me even.

Thin Premise and Hackneyed Plot and Character Devices

I only made it through 6 minutes of this show but that was enough to see that it is poorly written, poorly acted and relies upon the clumsiest versions of exposition that they could come up with. It might have been retrievable if they went for a comedy genre but the curly haired woman on a space ship because curly hair makes her look good is just dumb. The fake Scottish (??? I think it as supposed to be Scottish) accent from one guy gratuitously introduced with his shirt off because he's in an ice bath complete with face ice and the Serbian woman who... wait for it... is wearing a headscarf so we know she's Eastern European despite having no other indicators of where she is from other than her blatantly saying it as she kisses some guy she's not supposed to kiss.

Not sure if I could provide plot spoilers because I don't think there's a plot.

How do shows like this get funding?

Science: It's a Choice, not a Rule

This showed that it is at best Space-Fantasy and absolutely NOT Science-Fiction shortly after the ship got its "wheel" rotating again and suddenly, the entire ship -- even the non-rotating parts! -- had gravity again. AND, the gravity in the rotating ring had people standing on a floor with the feet towards the CENTER of the ring -- the exact opposite of the way things actually work! So, there's no science in the show and every "sciency" fantasy the writers had is pretty dumb. Not to mention that the characters all have societal disorders and the few smart ones are more like savants, since they appear to have no smarts other than what is needed for a single, specific task.

Naughty bad! Bad, bad! It is sooooo bad, it is funny!

I will begin by saying that I will watch the second episode to see if it can top the pilot. Make no mistake! It is THAT bad! Making a worse episode will be an achievement in itself. I gave it a 3/10 because one is reserved for the worst and also because that is what my high-school teachers used to punish me with for being simultaneously stupid and naughty, which the show is. Now, I had more fun reading the reviews, but let's approach this with a more generous view and rename it "High-school drama squad running wild on Syfy sets", insert some "behind the scenes/making off" scenes, and now we have a show! A show with an exasperated director, a bunch of kids trying their best and failing, where parents are the only happy people because this is, without a doubt, all the argument one needs to convince their kids to choose another career, and also because they were rudely ejected from the Ark. At least, they don't witness the real disaster!

Anyhow, I am strapping in for episode two!

Absolutely awful

There are some things that are bad but passable with this show, other things where I have not seen anything else do worse.

Casting... Who was responsible for this casting? Every one of these actors felt like their only prior work was TV commercials and high school plays. I looked a few up and yeah, none of them have had a contributing role in any decent tv show or movie

Writing also plays a big part in why this was bad, although some of it is passable so overall it's not as big of a factor as the terrible casting.

It's like a soap opera in space, but not a good soap opera.... the worst of the soap operas. And set mostly in highschool.

Someone was really desperate for a show and decided on this.

This actually makes Another Life, which I also suffered through, look good. That at least had Katee Sackhoff doing some good work, this one has no one doing good work. God awful.

I can't believe I spent time on this twice.

Makes 'Category 7: The end of the world' look like a Shakespearean masterpiece. If this is the best of us that we have to send out to make sure we survive as a species, well, I submit we need to let the whole world burn. It's shockingly bad and hard to watch. I watched a few episodes of 'Space: 1999' just to see if they would hold up better than this stink bomb, and S1999 had better SFX and a plot for the show. Went ahead and gave it a two episode effort. I will be damned if it didn't get worse on episode two. Now I'm trying to find 85 characters so I can post this review and I think I am giving more effort than the writers of The Ark have in two episodes.

I don't think I'll make it past episode one!

How this was aired I'll never know. I decided to give it a go since someone from Stargate was involved but this has been painful to watch! I'm a lowly extra and even I'm cringing at the terrible accents and some absolutely terrible acting! Can't continue on at all! I thought the Scottish accent was questionable at first but then hearing some of the American accents was just so painful. I always found an American accent one of the easiest one to do but you can hear the British accent creeping in through most when they talk. Everyone is either over or under acting. No I'm between. The storyline feels ridiculously rushed even just in the first one episode!

But as bad as it looks!

This show is like eavesdropping on a show practicing in the mirror. If I listened to the directors commentary it would go like this: "I told them this wasn't going to work." "They didn't listen to me on the effects." "*Sob" "I'm sorry" "don't be mad at me" "I did my job I did the best I could do."

Ugh. Low key the first couple of seconds I thought the show was anime. The effects were so bad I thought this was animation. You can watch it if you want a laugh. Its not actually that bad. It's that bad actually! You'll understand that after you watch this show. I apologize on behalf of the academy!

What were the maker thinking!

Very mediocre show, in every department - direction, acting, screenplay, cast, dialogues, CGI. Simply fails overall. The characters are, I wouldn't say cliched, but that they are simply not believable. They do not fit in this show, probably a good fit in another show. This alone is enough to ruin any show, but wait, there is more. The direction and acting is as if the show was a science fiction parody and not the real thing. Could have actually worked if it WAS tweaked and sold as a parody. Everyone gives the same exaggerated expression irrespective of the gravity of the situation. Even a student of filmmaking would have failed their course if they dished out something like this! I am certainly going to give this one a miss.

Cheesy Acting, Cheap CG and Unsympathetic Characters

Wow. And I read such a GLOWING article saying how wonderful this show was. Nope. Interesting premise completely ruined with silly script, VERY cheesy acting and cheap computer graphics.

This show is much more suitable for the CW network. I predict a short lifespan for this poorly executed show. I'm surprised that this show is on the same network that created wonderful products such as Resident Alien, etc.

And of course you add in unnecessarily silly plotlines such as nobody is who they say they are.

Watching the upcoming scenes from the next episode 2 looks like even more of the same.

Sooooo, I'm taking this off my recording list and skipping it. Very disappointed with this "highly-touted" show. The current 3.7 IMDb rating speaks for itself. What studio exec signed off on this thing and thought it was worth bringing to market??

This is....

Snowpiercer in Space. It was a slow moving vehicle as soon as it left the launchpad. It would have been better as a comedy. Oh yes, it already is. Avenue 5. Just a ;imited amount of food, water and resources of all kind. I don't I am going to be anble to watch the scoend episode. If this was the premise, week by week we will deal with a crisis of the predicament. I don't see that as the sme type of never ending space flight like Star Trek and it's subsequint follow up shows. With all the commanders deceased, the power struggle will be the main venue. Woman vs. Caveman, I think we all see where this is headed.

Ridiculous Writing/Horrible Acting

This is the 2nd Serbian production I have watched, the first was the Outpost that co-starred Reece Ritchie who is the only good actor in this trash. I guess this is what millennials like since it looks like it's being renewed for a 3rd season after skipping a year after the 2nd season. Skip this and watch all 4 seasons of the Outpost, an excellent series.

Compared to sci-fi years ago this is truly pathetic. I'll name a few space drama shows: Battlestar Galactica (2004-2009), Firefly, Andromeda and Stargate Universe to name a few that blows this embarrassing production out of the water. The younger generation should stick to staring at their smartphones all day, they can't write nor act.

It *barely* gets better

I rate this 3/10 for being a waste of time (anything below 5 imo). It could definitely be worse, but it is not good. The pilot is indicative of S1 and mostly of S2, don't let the episode reviews deceive you like it did me. There are marginal improvements in the story midway through S1, but all of the other warts remain.

What you see in the pilot is what you can expect throughout, so if you don't like that then I would move on, *especially* the cringe moments.

This show was one of the few shows that I regularly find myself unable to watch and is a struggle to get through. I think the budget hurt the production quality making it regularly immersion breaking (for me atleast) which might have been survivable with good writing, though unfortunately, the writing was terrible

  • Dialog is terrible throughout, literally cringe inducing and unwatchable moments come up in most episodes
  • Writing is poor and each episode has the "what did you just say"/deus ex machina moment neatly wrapping the monster of the week in the final act feeling very unearned and low stakes. Character motivations regularly make no sense and are made to fit the plot
  • Acting is ok, if we assume the issue is purely with the writing. A few characters still seem unbelievable and stand out like Strickland (wooden) and Maddox (characteur). There is very little charisma between the actors and the scenes where they act as crewmates all seem *incredibly* forced.

  • Scifi elements are very poorly done, feels closer to a teen drama. Feels like they are just riffing on the classic stories from ST, SG1, BSG (even has a *very* similar sound when BSG cut to commercials)
  • Props are done...cheaply. There is a scene with faceshileds for hazmat helmets. Probably most notably wrist devices in basically every episode looking like a kids toy. The "batons" look like pressure washer guns...
  • Set design makes no sense, size, openness, "office" setup for the brige, spin vs no-spin sections, etc.

  • Costumes are hit and miss the S1 doctor cross looks like it is electrical taped on top of the fabric, biker jackets is hilarious, poncho for surgery...
  • CGI...
  • Mystery Box/intrigue was actually handled ok imo.
