- Carla, a stressed-out real estate broker, retires and plans to enjoy her new-found freedom. But she can't cope with not being needed and succumbs to heavy drinking. Only janitor Horst, a former alcoholic, finds ways to address her problem.
- Her job has always been a calling for her: Carla, a successful broker in a well-known Hamburg real estate company, has subordinated all private matters to her job all her life. Her family in particular always suffered as a result. The consequence: Her husband gave up at some point to court her attention and divorced her. The now grown-up daughter Ellen also avoids her after countless disappointments. The power woman never really realized all of that. Until after a long announcement she dares to take the decisive step and retires. She moves into a smaller apartment and resolves to enjoy her new freedom. However, it doesn't take long before she becomes painfully aware, without a job or daily task, that she is actually all alone in life. Her husband has long since had a new wife and Ellen is about to take up a job in distant New York. Like many people who only lived for a career, Carla feels the same way: when she leaves her job she falls into a deep hole. Her loneliness and the feeling of not being missed or needed by anyone drowns her in alcohol. The addiction is insidious: the glass of champagne at noon turns into a whole bottle. And when the bottle of champagne is no longer enough, she turns to harder material. In the supermarket, vegetables and pasta only end up in the shopping trolley to cover up the supply of cognac. Carla doesn't want to admit that she is dependent on herself. She doesn't have a person to talk to about her problem. The distinguished lady harshly rejects the offers of help from her sympathetic caretaker Horst Keller. Her unsuccessful attempt to get back to her usual life through her old job completely tipped the situation: After the worried Horst found her lifeless in her apartment, she was taken to the hospital with severe alcohol poisoning. But not even the urgent appeal of the doctor can convince them to seek professional help. Carla insists: she is not an alcoholic. Only when it is almost too late does she realize, with Horst's help, that things cannot go on like this.
