MipJunior: Streamers’ Kids Content Acquisitions Increase as Commissioning Plunges – Ampere Analysis
Image
“In 2007 I watched the “X Files” on YouTube. That changed my consumer experience!” said analyst firm Ampere Analysis’s Research Manager Olivia Deane, invited to discuss audience’s shift in the last 20 years, structural adaptations and new business models in kids’ content at MipJunior’s opening session Oct. 18.

From the boom of on-demand to peak and post-peak TV, kids content creators have been on a rollercoaster in the last two decades, as explained by Deane in her presentation ‘Mapping out a New Era of Kids TV & Entertainment’ at the Grand Theatre of the Jw Marriot Cannes.

First the good news. During the years 2004-2014 defined by Dean as “the first age of on-demand,” “children had the ability to access media at any time, and were more likely to have more than one TV connected device than households without,” noted the expert.

To adapt to this trend and surge in demand,...

‘Wakfu’ Creator Ankama Expands Scope With Minority Stake in French Animation Studio InTheBox
Image
Ankama, the French company behind the cult favorite adult animated feature “Mutafukaz” and video game franchises such as “Dofus” and “Wakfu,” has acquired a minority stake in Inthebox, a thriving Annecy-based animation studio.

The alliance will allow Ankama to “fast-track its production pipeline and benefit from Inthebox’s expertise with different techniques, such as 3D animation,” Ankama’s co-founder Anthony Roux told Variety in a conversation with Inthebox’s co-founders Mathieu Marin and Madjid Chamekh (pictured). “Even if they also do 2D and stop-motion projects, they have a know-how in 3D which we don’t have,” Roux continued.

Roux said that working with 3D animation opens many doors that are no longer accessible to 2D projects. “In France, there are still people working in 2D but as soon as you want to make a bit of money or be slightly more commercial it has to be in 3D,” Roux said,...

Image
Pulsar Content (“The Deep House”) has secured worldwide sales on “Dragon Princess,” an ambitious animated feature produced by Ankama, the thriving French studio behind the international franchises “Dofus” and “Wakfu.”

Directed by Jean-Jacques Denis (“Dofus”) and Anthony Roux, “Dragon Princess” tells the story of Bristle, a little girl who is being raised by dragons. When her father is forced to give up his second most valuable possession to Sorcerog, a witch frog, he offers up Bristle. Falling into despair, the little girl flees the family cave and embarks on a journey of discovery in the world of humans. She learns the meaning of friendship and solidarity – and greed, which seems to eat away at men’s heart.

Now completed, the feature was written and produced by Roux, a comicbook author and filmmaker who is the co-founder of Ankama. Based in Northern France, the company best known for developing in-house several...

There's a Bit Of Bluth In Trailer For French Animation Dofus Livre 1: Julith
There's something refreshing to the trailer for Jean-Jaques Denis and Wakfu director Anthony Roux's upcoming French animated feature Dofus Livre 1: Julith. For while the film clearly makes use of the full range of modern tools at the animators' disposal it equally clearly draws its inspirations - both in terms of story and art style - not from the post-Pixar wave of animated features but from the much earlier traditions of 2D cell animation with what feels to me like an obvious - and appreciated - nod to the work of Don Bluth. The strange little guy in the blue hood is well known to Krosmoz. His name is Joris and he's proposing to take you on a fantastic adventure. Our hero is leading a happy...
