Tennant is an 11 out of 10!

I'm familiar with Sheen's work. I like the way he acts and the scripts he selects. 2 things astonished and delighted me about Good Omens 1:

1. The writing is a 10. Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett selected the most interesting subject to create a show and made a comedy jewel. I have only recently learned Good Omens' originated as a book. It is now in my shopping cart.

2. David Tennant is one of those actors who had passed me by. I remember thinking he was good. I suppose I took him for granted. I've never watched Dr. Who, or seen him in a Shakespeare play. 2 errors I plan to correct.

Tennant is BRILLIANT as Crowley. Recently, I coincidentally watched a couple of other movies he's in. He changes his voice and affects his accent perfectly each time. Tennant has created a specific walk for Crawley. The way he moves around Aziraphale at the Globe Theatre as a snake encircling his pray. The teen-like manner he moves when he's annoyed. Tennant is an 11 out of 10!

The only reason I gave this show 9 stars is I don't like the custom choice for Anathema Device. She's a contemporary "witch." I fail to see the point of dressing her like a dark Mary Poppins.

I haven't watched season 2 yet. I've decided to watch Season 1 again before getting to Season 2. I'm enjoying every bit of it! I think you will too.

EDIT: Just watched season 2. Terry Pratchett's input is really missing here. I can't help to think if he were alive, this story wouldn't have taken this direction. This has nothing to do with moral judgement. I just think part of what makes the show so compelling is it's interpretations of the portions where the characters intersect with passages of the Bible. The storyline has been completely divorced from the original concept on season 2. My score for this series is now a 7. Tennant is still brilliant.

Cute and Fluffy

In a nutshell: it is very cute. Although the themes of good and evil, heaven and hell, are rather epic and grand, this at heart just a small, gentle story of two men who hang out in a bookshop together, go to the pub together, pretend not to like each other, but secretly adore each other beyond the telling.

For me, it verged sometimes on schmaltzy. Whimsy is nice. Absurd is nice. But as an English person, with these things I can't always quite shake the feeling that it's a version of England and Englishness being sold shamelessly to Americans. The cuteness of it, like a little decorative teacup, is charming for sure, but I missed a bit of bite too. There are moments when it could almost bite, but then it seems to get scared and back down fast. For all that, Sheen and Tenant are extremely experienced actors who make it fun, watchable, and easy, ably supported by John Hamm (another highly professional actor), who seems to be having the time of his life with this relatively simple, comedic part.

Series 1 fantastic, series 2 rambling & pointless

I loved series 1 it was funny, imaginative & actually had a running storyline that went somewhere.

Series 2 just rambles on with no apparent direction & follows no storyline other than Gabrielle has lost his memory & no one knows why. Something that happened in the first half of the first episode.

Throughout both series David Tennant is fantastic as Crowley & Michael Sheen is an excellent foil.

I just don't know why they couldn't of actually come up with a storyline for the second series.

I guess that once you've done the whole 'end of the world' storyline you really don't have anywhere to go.

I just hope if they do a third series that they put somemore thought into the plot.

Series 1 - 9/10 Series 2 - 5/10 Average - 7/10.

(a bit spoiler) Poor script and senseless complexity in the story line

Before Good Omens fans want to attack me, I must say that I myself was really waiting to see a more interesting season with a strong and unpredictable story, but unfortunately I didn't get it. Neil Gaiman is a very good writer but I don't know what happened to him. The story of the second season tries to be different and mysterious, but unfortunately it fails. I enjoyed watching it, but I was expecting a much better and more interesting new season that would keep me excited until the end of the story. I know a lot of fans enjoyed watching it because everyone has their own opinion. However, I loved the kiss between Aziraphale and Crowley, and it's the only brilliant sequence in Season 2 in my opinion.

Season 1 was great.. Season 2 not so much.

Huge fan of Pratchett and Gaiman here. Season 1 did not disappoint. 10/10. The show was clever and fun. The story line was suitable for children and adults. The main characters were a group of kids ... but the writing was so clever that adults are also fully engaged. STELLAR SHOW.

I was so excited to see a Season 2!!!

Sadly ... Season 2 was disappointing. This season has become yet another Amazon propaganda piece where diversity is prized above plot or artistic value and we get saddled with characters who don't ring true.

The Angel in a wheelchair? I'm disabled. I like to see representation. But an ANGEL? Why wouldn't she just get divine healing? A human character in a wheelchair ... ok ... that makes sense. But if you're going to give us a powerful angel who can do miracles ... we need some backstory as to why no one did a healing miracle. Feels like she was just written as "we need to show a powerful character in a wheelchair". But did you, really?

Season 2 also felt contrived that nearly EVERY couple is gay or trans. Except for the token straight couple. Yes, the lesbian shop keepers are cute. Their story arc makes sense. Their characters ring true. But another couple felt like: "Oh we need to show a trans person who goes by they/them in a relationship". Not forwarding the plot or deepening characterizations.

I would let children watch it ... nothing too outrageous ... but it lost the innocent fun of Season 1.

I fear some ppl will feel Season 2 isn't suitable for kids b/c they just want to watch a show without having it become a "teaching moment" about trans rights. And I can't blame them. Not every show needs to be "Rocky Horror Picture Show".

Sometimes we want to just relax and enjoy a good story.

The last thing is the end. It ends on a cliffhanger that is clearly the set-up for Season 3. Many shows do this ... but it was jarring. I liked that Season 1 had a proper ending ... and Season 2 was a happy surprise.

Now if feels like we're being manipulated. Season 2 wasn't that good but we HAVE to watch Season 3 to find out what happens. It's a cheap trick that a truly great show (Like Season 1) wouldn't need.

Bad Script Met with Exceptional Acting

Both Michael Sheen and David Tennant showcased remarkable talents that truly left an impression. Despite the limitations in the material, their performances were top-notch, demonstrating their exceptional skill.

However, the storyline encountered hurdles. The absence of a clear central plot was evident, and certain scenes felt unnecessary. While attempting to convey important themes, the execution missed the mark, leaving us puzzled.

Despite the outstanding acting, the show struggled to weave a captivating narrative. Inconsistencies in certain elements affected our overall engagement with the series.

I love this show

It started a bit slow for me- I wasn't exactly sure what I was watching and where the story was going- but by episode 3, I really couldn't get enough. The interaction between the angel and demon is just gold! It had me laughing and excited all at the same time. Loved this show!

Update: had to drop the rating from a 9 to a 7 because of season 2. Completely unnecessary. Had to stop watching. Should've ended at season 1.

Quirky production delivered in style

From the Frances McDormand narrative and the Addams Family style theme tune onwards there's plenty of laughs and quirky entertainment to be had along the way. Michael Sheen as always is on fine form but in this production he's outshone by a fabulous performance by David Tennant as the demonic and not so demonic Crowley. It's a barnstorming performance worthy of an Emmy. There are some moments that drag a little and perhaps could have been trimmed but overall the performance of the two leads and their characters developing relationship together with some very funny scenes make for an entertaining and uplifting ride.

Season two is incredible

Now, I'll be completely honest - season one didn't impress me. I watched it with a flatmate and it was nice to have a laugh but it was also all over the place and I really didn't care about the subplots. In my opinion, season one focuses way too much on secondary characters and not enough on the main duo. So when I learned that season two is on the horizon, I wasn't sure if I was going to watch it or not. When it did come out, I've decided to give it a shot mostly because I was craving something fun and light. And oh god, season two is an absolute masterpiece.

It seems like the creators of the show have really done their homework and fixed all the things that were not so great about season one. This time, ALL the focus is on Crowley and Aziraphale, and their relationship is an incredible one to follow. The overall dynamic of the season is also much improved compared to season one, and I've watched all the episodes in one go. Nothing about the second installment has disappointed me. Highly recommend, just know that it only gets better as you go.

First Season Amazing, Second Not So Much

I would rate the first season a 10/10 and the second season a 7/10. Clever writing, great and unique story telling, and of course great acting by the two leading actors. The first season I binged in one day because it's that good. It started a little slow in the first episode and I almost stopped watching, but it was all over the place trying to set up the story and characters. By the end, I was intrigued and very happy I didn't quit the series. The second season was not bad, but the reason for the lower rating is that I was very happy with the "bromance" and bestie storyline. Why in the world did they have to change it from a bromance to a romance. That aspect felt forced. The characters work so well in their dynamic. I think the romance ruins the whole story. IMDB has the series listed at ending in 2023, but there is no word yet on its cancellation. If there is a third season, I hope they can get back on board with the clever writing and witty banter.

Bad Story, AMAZING CHARACTERS

I'll briefly talk about what I don't like so I can end this review on a positive note: The story and most side characters were extremely boring and unineresting to me. The main premise of the show is quite funny but as soon as it gets to characters that are not our main protagonists, it gets unineresting pretty quickly.

HOWEVER the writers seem to be aware of this since the main focus of the show is not the story or the side characters but mostly the relationship between our tow protagonists. In the finale for example the main story is wrapped up pretty quickly to give our protagonists their time to shine. The main character absolutely carry the show. Both characters are amazingly written and acted. And the chemistry between them is just awesome to watch. As soon as these two enter the scene the show immediately gets 100 times better. I live them.

An epic story about the human condition

Gaiman and Pratchett. Two of the greatest modern philosophers. Story tellers beyond compare. Teamed together, they created Good Omens and it is a masterpiece.

Having both enthralled me with their tales for 40 years, Neil Gaiman has honoured the late great Terry Pratchett with a fantastical transition to script. I'm sure Terry knew he was the only person who could do it.

The ensemble, especially Tennant and Sheen, embody their roles. They entertain as easily as they breathe. Transfixed the audience is carried through time and universe in the greatest story of all.

Series 3 must be delivered.

Better than book

You must watch, let the dynamics of Tennant and Sheen be your first reason here. That's why I'd like to give my armful of love to Amazon, which has helped me realize how much I've missed watching Tennant since Doctor Who. On the other hand, this absurd comedy, where not only two, but each performer has a great performance, has everything for you to watch. With Frances McDormand's voice of God, Jon Hamm's Angel Gabriel and exciting Queen songs I can count on you for many more reasons.

If you are fond of the apocalyptic theme like me, I strongly recommend without hesitation. When you say references from the Bible, prophecies and information about the history of witchcraft history, you really don't understand how time passes.

Something Different

In a fantasy world, the on-screen fiction alludes to biblical references in centralising around demons and angels and their respective roles in publishing the world. Michael Sheen stars as the flawless angel Aziraphale opposing to his joint-protagonist David Tennant who portrays Crowley, a rebellious yet laid back demon. The impressive cast includes names such as Nick Offerman, Jon Hamm, Jack Whitehall, Frances McDormand, Michael McKean and Benedict Cumberbatch. The beauty of the show is the cinematography, seen through its contrasted utopia and dystopia manifesting the illusions conveyed by the shows creators. In essence, the programme explores the dangerous relationship of Crowley and Aziraphale, both of which disobey their conventions to work together and prevent the demon-child from bringing eternal damnation on Earth. An uncertainty looms over the planet and it is the 'good' in people that can save its existence, the show fits a narrow platform - a very much fictional and imaginative watch, providing a classic good vs evil significance. Interesting and peculiar - Good Omens supplies a forced seriousness that mingles with humour. It may not be everybody's type of programme, but its religious relevance and uncommon format entices those who dare to venture through the many apparitions. The episodes offer something different to television, however, it may appear to drag out of proportion at times

Neil...you could've done better

I have loved Terry's Pratchett and Neil Gaiman's book Good Omens since it came out. I have had to buy it three times due to pages falling out from reading the paperback too much, then losing one on holidays.

Now I have a TV series to go and get the box set for! Or do I?

While the two lead characters are inspiring, and the story is 'fairly' true to the book (or in my case books), I can't help but feel vague disappointment with the series. Before you think that it is just that no one can ever replicate a reader's imagination (and thank god/Satan for that), truly it is down to the casting More than anything else. The two leads are fantabulous. However Mr. Tennant, one of my all time favourite Scotsmen, appears to be openly channeling Bill Nighy. The lady who plays Anathema is distractingly beautiful, not her fault of course, however one can never quite get to grips with her role and it feels as if the pro divers were too afraid to give such an important role to someone who can simply act the part and doesn't necessarily need to be modelling the part. Jack Whitehall is simply miscast and a terrible actor. I look forward to seeing the soon to be released animated film featuring him, as he should very well be banished from 'acting' on screen ever again. Why was he chosen? What does it add to the character to have a British posh stand up comedian playing the role?

All in all, I will firmly slot this box set directly next to my Discworld series DVDs, to be pulled out when drunk enough to ignore the obvious poor casting and lack of strong female characters. But I will still buy it. It is Terry and Neil after all...

Better than expected

I resisted watching this for a long time. Good Omens is one of my favourite books and the characters are very crystallised in my mind. While I like Martin Sheene enormously, his look and demeanour in trailers clashed with my mental image of Gabriel.

I was much mistakes however, they have done a fabulous job and it is a very enjoyable dramatisation. One thing that did stand out though was that the producers seem to have decided that Bill Nighy was too old for the role but taken Tennet aside and said just imagine you're playing Bill Nighy playing Crowley. Disagree, watch the opening scene on the wall.

Just a silly show

I kept watching hoping it would get better, it didn't. If you start watching this show with the mindset that it is just silly then you will not be dissapointed. This show has a lot of potential, I think stretching it to 6 episodes actually crippled it by stretching out content and storylines that didn't add to the show. 4 Episodes would have been great.

I enjoyed the shows' interpretation of religious doctrine and philosophies. I think both Michael Sheen and David Tennant were excellent in their respective roles. It took me until episode 6 to make the connection with David Tennant's name "Crowley" and that he began as a snake. Very clever. Favorite part of the show is Crowley's car and blasting Queen's greatest hits.

Shame

Very surprised by the other extremely high reviews. Don't get me wrong, love Martin and David in this; and they're some brilliant moments in this show. But the ending was such a let down. The whole point you're leading to this big climatic scene, and there just isn't one, no bit of action like they'd been hinting at, just an ending. Give it a go but accept that this is a good show but not a great show.
