Learn more- In this experimental short, a giraffe lands on a frozen planet where a penguin won't share his soda pop.
Written, directed, and animated by Hoyt Dwyer while he was a student at the Creative Circus in Atlanta. The giraffe is played by Drew Vanderlip, and the Penguin is played by Chad Hall - current wide receiver coach for the Buffalo Bills, and childhood friend of Hoyt.
In the short - which is still available on YouTube as of the time of this writing - the giraffe lands on the planet in a spaceship, and talks to the Penguin before the flightless bird disappears.
This project was one of Hoyt Dwyer's earliest forays into filmmaking, and is significant for being his first 2D animated project.
The character designs were created in Adobe Illustrator, and the animations themselves were conducted in Final Cut, (back when that was a thing.) Due to the limited resources when it was created, the filmmaker thought it would be funnier to lean into the clunky animation, and have limited interactions.
The score used is Thelonious Monk's song, Blue Monk.
The recording session with the actors was conducted in the basement guest room of Chad Hall's parent's house in GA, beside the Chattahoochee river.
Unfortunately, Alan Jackson was not way down yonder on the hooch at that time, and was thus unable to participate.
When the short film premiered in front of Hoyt's class at Creative Circus, the instructor was impressed at his ambition in creating a 2D animation in less than a week, but was less enthused about the abstract nature of the story. Hoyt's classmates were confused and generally off-put as well. This would become a general theme for the rest of the filmmakers tenure while at the now defunct school.
