Disney has now pulled an untitled Star Wars movie from its 2026 release calendar, and all signs point to the project being Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy's Rey-focused "New Jedi Order" (not the official title).
The movie was scheduled to hit theatres on December 18, 2026, but is no longer on the slate, having been replaced by Ice Age 6.
Official plot details on the Rey movie have yet to be disclosed, but the film is expected to be set 15 years after the events of The Rise of Skywalker and focus on Rey training a new generation of Jedi warriors. It's unclear if the movie will ever see the light of day, but even if it remains on the shelf, Lucasfilm is said to have big plans in place for the former scavenger turned powerful Force-wielder.

The future of the Star Wars franchise may be filling up with more and more in-development movies, but there is still plenty of uncertainty around how many of these will actually end up being released. Now it looks like Disney has removed one of those movies from its planned release date of December 18, 2026 and replaced it with the newly announced Ice Age 6.
There are several movies that could have been set to release in that slot, although it was never officially confirmed. Of the movies that are expected to make it through production first, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoys Rey movie or James Mangolds Dawn of the Jedi were the most likely to take that slot, as The Mandalorian & Grogu has been confirmed to release in May 2026.
While this change does not necessarily mean that one of the planned Star Wars movies is about to be canceled, the timing comes just days after...

Disney originally had two Star Wars movies slated for release in 2026, but now it’s down to just one. The studio has pulled the December 18, 2026 project off the calendar, which was believed to be (but wasn’t certain) the one that would feature Daisy Ridley’s return as Rey. Ice Age 6, which was announced at D23 Brazil just last week, will take its place.
The other Star Wars movie still slated for release in 2026 is The Mandalorian & Grogu, which will be released in theaters on May 22, 2026. Honestly, I think it’s for the best. As much as Disney might want Star Wars to be another Marvel-like big-screen franchise, it just isn’t. Plus, given how long it takes Disney to develop these Star Wars projects, I doubt they could keep up that schedule.

Why would the franchise want to go back to the post-Rise of Skywalker era, when all the interesting action in the Star Wars universe is occurring in the timeline of The Mandalorian?
When the Fight Club author Chuck Palahniuk described modern consumer culture as “a copy of a copy of a copy”, he was probably thinking of Ikea churning out coffee tables with all the personality of an overcooked noodle, rather than the next episodes in a long-running space opera known for heroes who use quizzically reversed syntax. Nevertheless, he might easily have been talking about Star Wars, and the once great saga’s descent into self parody in the wake of reports from Hollywood that the future of the franchise on the big screen is to be based on ... yep, you read it right ... Daisy Ridley’s Rey.

Lucasfilm wants to continue Rey’s story, as played by Daisy Ridley, with parallel Star Wars productions said to be writing plots around her character.
The Star Wars franchise has been a familiar enough sight on TV over the past five years, thanks to such shows as The Mandalorian and Andor. As we’ve recently explored, Lucasfilm is on shakier ground in cinemas, having been away from the big screen since 2019’s The Rise Of Skywalker.
Lucasfilm is evidently keen to continue the story of Rey, though, with actor Daisy Ridley set to reprise her role in a film directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy. Reportedly called New Jedi Order, that film is said to feature a more seasoned Rey, now the mentor to a new generation of trainee Jedi.

The Star Wars franchise is one of the biggest in the world, but Lucasfilm is clearly struggling to get the next stage of movies off the ground. It’s been nearly five years since the release of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, but it still feels as though the studio doesn’t have a clear plan for what’s next. Sure, there’s been plenty of projects announced, but so many of them have been shelved or are in limbo. However, a report from THR states that when Star Wars does return, Rey (Daisy Ridley) will be playing a role in several movies and that she will be “key to the franchise’s next turn.“
Daisy Ridley was already set to return as Rey for Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s (Ms. Marvel) movie, but it’s looking as though she may have a part to play in the recently announced trilogy...

Kylo Ren may have called Rey a nobody in The Last Jedi, but Lucasfilm certainly doesn't see the character that way. According to a new report, Daisy Ridley's lightsaber-wielding protagonist is at the heart of many future projects in the Star Wars franchise. Introduced in 2015's Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Rey became the new lead character of the franchise as well as its only surviving Skywalker when she adopted the name at the end of 2019's The Rise of Skywalker. While that might have been the end of the Skywalker Saga, Lucasfilm was not done with the character, as there have been active plans to develop a Rey-led spin-off film directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy.
In a new report, The Hollywood Reporter revealed that Lucasfilm seemingly has big plans for Rey. Simon Kinberg's recently announced Star Wars trilogy would seemingly have Rey in it in some fashion, which...

Star Wars' troubled Rey movie continues to stumble in development, potentially pointing to a greater problem plaguing Lucasfilm as a whole.
Originally announced at Star Wars Celebration 2023, the upcoming Rey film will see Daisy Ridley jump back into the saddle as her central Jedi from the Sequel Trilogy.
While many had assumed that of the three movies announced at Star Wars Celebration, the Rey movie would be the first to see the light of day (simply because it had an actress and director attached to it), that does not look to be the case, as the film has continually tripped over its own at every turn.

Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy plans to focus on Rey's journey as a female Jedi in upcoming Star Wars film. The filmmaker says she will drown out fandom voices until she's done. Kathleen Kennedy addresses ongoing backlash in Star Wars fandom, noting struggles for women in the franchise.

Discussing the project carefully with Variety, Obaid-Chinoy addressed being the target of overly critical fans, many of whom have called her hiring for the sequel another example of Disney woke-ism with threats to boycott the Rey movie, titled New Jedi Order, when its released. But Obaid-Chinoy is aware of, and even somewhat understands, the passion felt by Star Wars fans, and will ignore all of it until she is done.

The Star Wars franchise has entertained audiences since the 70s, and its reputation has never been the same since the original trilogy. The franchise has become infamous for being the most divisive in Hollywood with fan wars and immense toxicity prevalent now more than ever. The prequel and modern trilogy were a considerable step down from the original trilogy.

The world of Star Wars has been absent from the cinema for nearly five years after the mixed reception of 2019 The Rise of Skywalker, the film meant to cap off the now infamous Disney sequel trilogy of Star Wars films. The declining box office returns from film to film, as well as the box office bombing of 2018’s Solo, has led to the franchise being relegated to Disney+ shows.
In 2023, it was announced that Lucasfilm would be developing at least three new Star Wars films for theatrical release. One of them would follow the events of the sequels, with actress Daisy Ridley returning as Rey Palpetine. The film will supposedly follow her establishing another Jedi order and possibly be the start of a new trilogy. Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy herself said that the films were far along in development.

Producer and president of Lucasfilm Kathleen Kennedy has responded to the toxic side of the Star Wars fandom, saying women are much more likely to receive attacks online because of the fan base being so male dominated. Addressing the recent criticism from some of the fanbase towards the upcoming Disney+ series The Acolyte, Kennedy said that a lot of the women who step into Star Wars struggle with toxic fandom, with showrunner Leslye Headland the latest to bear the brunt.
My belief is that storytelling does need to be representative of all people. Thats an easy decision for me.

With another Star Wars Day ("May the 4th be with you") come and gone, let's take a closer look at a lead character from the most recent trilogy from Disney and Lucasfilm: Rey. Played to perfection by English actress Daisy Ridley, Rey dons the name Skywalker in the latest installment, and we can't wait to see what's next for the lightsaber-wielding hotshot.
Speaking of — it's now been confirmed that Ridley will return as Rey in a new Star Wars film to be directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy. The announcement was made at this year's Star Wars Celebration event, where Ridley even made a surprise appearance. The film will be written by Steven Knight and takes place 15 years after the events of the mixed-reviewed latest trilogy. While no release dates have been officially announced for any upcoming Star Wars films, one date stands out as the perfect release window for Rey's new Jedi Order movie. At Star Wars Celebration 2023, three new Star Wars films were officially announced for the next era of the franchise on the big screen. One is a film directed by Dave Filoni and set in the New Republic era which is set to culminate the story of The Mandalorian, while another centers on the origins of the Jedi Order, written and directed by James Mangold.
The third film was confirmed to be set after Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, focusing on the rebuilding of the Jedi Order by Rey Skywalker. Other than the return of Daisy Ridley and the confirmation that Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy will direct the film, not much has been divulged about the project, including a release date. That being said,...

Dave Filoni’s The Mandalorian movie is one of Star Wars’ most exciting upcoming projects, but there is much to be revealed about how it fits into the franchise. It was easy to predict that The Mandalorian’s success would eventually lead to a major crossover event involving other series, or even a feature film. Still, the announcement of a The Mandalorian movie directed by Filoni at Star Wars Celebration 2023 was surprising.
Filoni’s Star Wars movie announcement comes as The Mandalorian season 3 concludes and before Ahsoka premiers. The Mandalorian movie is being described as a culmination of the Mandoverse, which refers to the live-action Star Wars shows set in the years after Return of the Jedi: The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, Ahsoka, and Skeleton Crew. Given how Ahsoka continues stories from Star Wars Rebels, the animated Star Wars shows are also expected to inform Filoni’s Star Wars film.

The only thing certain about Rey's new Jedi Order that will be showcased in an upcoming Star Wars film is that it will be entirely different from the organization as it was seen in the prequel trilogy. One of the more striking differences between the prequel trilogy and the other two main eras of Star Wars is the state of the Jedi Order. In the original trilogy and sequel trilogy, the Jedi were scattered, with the galaxy's conflicts largely being fought by one sole warrior such as Luke and Rey.
The prequel trilogy, however, showed the Jedi Order in full force, before they fell to Emperor Palpatine and the Galactic Empire. This meant that the portrayal of the Jedi was entirely different in the prequels than anything else in Star Wars, something that Rey's Jedi Order will be shown in stark contrast with. From political goals and who can train...

After the recent announcements from Lucasfilm about Star Wars' future from Star Wars Celebration 2023 (Swce), it is clear Luke Skywalker's Legends stories from after the original trilogy are being handed to Rey\ and Ahsoka Tano. While this may annoy a particular section of the Star Wars fanbase that holds Luke's Legends stories close to their heart, Rey and Ahsoka being given these stories will serve the franchise better in the long run. With two of the three Star Wars films announced at Swce 2023 centering on Rey and Ahsoka, the future of the Force revolves around these two characters.
