Staying with Joseph, his driven wife Margaret and their only son, Marco, in Olivares City is Margaret's sister Virginia, who has no family of her own. Marco has a girlfriend, Jane Bonifacio, when he meets and falls in love with Emily Cardenas, one of the helpers in their hacienda. Marco breaks it off with Jane and follows his heart. After a bad start, Marco and Emily find themselves falling for each other. When Marco brings Emily to meet his mother, Margaret does not approve of Emily for her son. But Marco is willing to fight for Emily.

Margaret will do anything to stop Marco from marrying Emily. She finds an opportunity when she learns about Marco's playful bets with his friends about Emily. Through Margaret's meddling, Emily finds out about the bet and confronts Marco about it. The lovers separate and Emily lies as she tells Marco that she never loved him and she just used him for his money. Emily leaves Olivares, together with his father Herman. Herman owes a large amount of money from his co-workers and they think that Herman ran away from them. Meanwhile, Marco tries to look for Emily but his search is in vain. Margaret's men find Emily and Herman and when Herman is about to be arrested, Emily owns up to her father's crime.

Through Margaret's interference, Emily is sent to jail causing Herman to die of heart attack. Virginia finds out about Margaret's plans and the siblings have a heated argument. Joseph tries to comfort Virginia and Margaret overhears about Virginia and Joseph's past that was kept to her for so long. Virginia decides to leave the house and let Margaret and Joseph in peace. Meanwhile, Emily finds out that she's pregnant with Marco's child but when Marco finally finds her and pays her a visit, she doesn't tell him about her condition. Instead, she pretends that she never cared for Marco and what happened between them was a lie. Marco decides he should move on with his life and asks Jane to marry him. Marco and Jane get married, while Emily gives birth to a baby boy but her son dies.

Following Joseph's wake, the Montenegros discover that a new family has moved in the neighboring Moreno hacienda, the Alcantaras as their respective children meet each other. A flu outbreak forces the new kids to move into the Montenegro household. Following the death of his son Jonathan, William Alcantara meets a young boy, Daniel and his Lola Genia, both of whom he decides to take in. As Virginia returns to the town of Olivares, she learns that Margaret is taking her family abroad. Young Nathan and Katerina say goodbye to each other and she takes a liking to Daniel even as her brother, Tomas, bullies him. Daniel fights back after Tomas hurts Katarina. William confronts Tomas and Daniel after their fight but Katerina vouches for Daniel. During this time, Emily is finally released from jail.

Fresh from playing out in the rain, Daniel suddenly sees Katerina in a different light. In the fields, Daniel finds the infinity ring that Marco once gave to Emily. Katerina gets a letter from Nathan saying their family is coming back for a visit to Olivares. The Montenegros finally return and William hosts a dinner for them. Virginia has mixed emotions seeing Margaret again. Joanna, Marco's daughter, takes a fancy to Daniel, flirting with him in the stables. Katarina's excitement over seeing Nathan isn't shared by Daniel. Daniel finally graduates from high school. Threatened and jealous of Daniel, Tomas announces he will leave and demands his share of the hacienda inheritance. William discovers Daniel's gift in wine-making and decides to venture into the business. Katerina quizzes Daniel after he pulls an all-nighter with a girl and enjoys the jealous fit she displays. Daniel shows Katerina the wine-making experiments he has been doing and they soon find themselves in a tight embrace. Daniel breaks away from the kiss and says they can't be romantic towards each other.

Katerina tells Genia that she likes Daniel and will do anything to have him like her back. Daniel however acts awkward towards Katerina and she decides to go on a date with Jack, a classmate of hers. After seeing Katerina's over made-up face and short dress, Daniel decides to follow the two and punches Jack after he tries to forcibly kiss Katerina. William decides to give Katerina a debut party and Daniel feels jealous when she chooses Jack to be her escort. Daniel decides to give the infinity ring to Katerina as a gift on her birthday. Meanwhile, the Montenegros decide to go back and live in Olivares once again. Emily, who is now a rich woman, also returns to her old hometown seeking revenge on those who wronged her.

Jack has a family emergency and says he can't come to Katerina's party. William tells his daughter she doesn't have to worry for Daniel will be her escort for the night. Tomas arrives at the party unexpectedly and continues to taunt Daniel after seeing his father still very proud of the young man. Daniel loses his composure and gets into a fistfight with Tomas. Katerina is angry Daniel ruined her birthday party but he presents to her the ring as his gift. They officially become a couple but Katerina asks Daniel to keep their relationship secret as her father wants her to finish high school before having a boyfriend. However, their sweetness towards each other does not escape Manang Genia's observant eyes.

Daniel and Katerina admit they are already a couple to Genia. She tells them not to rush into falling in love as Katerina is still very young. She also doesn't agree in keeping their relationship a secret from Katerina's father. A storm ravages Olivares, further damaging the farm's already meager crop. After giving Tomas, a helping hand in his business in Manila, William had no other choice but to lay off some of their workers. Despite the hard work that lies ahead of them, Daniel and Katerina swear that they would love each other 'til the day they die.

The Montenegros are back and Emily rejoices as she will be able to execute her plan of revenge. Daniel and Katerina continue to keep their relationship a secret. Katerina refuses to go to the prom, thinking of the expenses plus she cannot bring Daniel as her date. Seeing how Katerina really wanted to go, Daniel recreates the prom inside the hacienda just for Katerina. William asks Daniel to go on his behalf to check on Tomas' business as he is asking for more money to fund it. Daniel is hesitant for aside from not being on good terms with Tomas, he also doesn't have the knowledge on how a bar in Manila is profitable or not.

Nathan immediately goes to the neighboring farm to see Katarina and asks her to have lunch with his family. Marco learns how the storm devastated Olivares and Katarina says if the Montenegro's farm becomes operational again, they would be surely helping the families who need work. When Daniel learns Katarina is with Nathan, he immediately goes over to his house. Katarina was already anxious to leave as she is to help Daniel with farm duties. However as they were leaving, a guard dog attacks Katarina. William, who is out on a business trip, agrees with Marco that Katarina should stay with them while her wound heals. Marco discovers that Daniel has talent in making wine. He asks Daniel to accompany him to Manila when he learns the young man is also going there to see Tomas. Marco meets a client at a posh restaurant and he is shocked when he sees Emily from afar.

Nathan continues to wait on Katerina, hand and foot. He confesses that he loves her, even when they were just writing to each other. Katerina lies and says William doesn't want her to have a boyfriend until she finishes high school. William learns from the doctor that he has suffered a mild heart attack and she warns him that another attack can kill him. Johanna continues to intimidate Katerina and Jane apologizes for her daughter's behavior. Daniel learns that Tomas is wasting his father's money gambling. However, Tomas has his friends pretend to be robbers, stealing his things and beating him up. Daniel has no other choice but to ask Marco for help. Jane and Johanna arrive in Manila as a surprise to Marco. They were shocked to see Daniel looking dirty and in bare feet.

Johanna meets Emily aka Emilia Guidoti. Emily befriends Johanna to get into the Montenegro household. Johanna mentions meeting Emilia to her father, who instantly recalls Emily. Jane is offended but Marco assures her that he has forgotten his first love. Johanna insists on seeing Manila's night life with Daniel. She kisses Daniel on the dance floor and he insists they go home or he will just wait for her outside the club. Jane is worried how they will tell Johanna that they are actually half-sisters instead of mother and daughter. Johanna is an illegitimate daughter of her father and it would hurt Jane's mother to know that she is an accomplice to her father's infidelity. Nathan formally tells William that he likes Katerina and asks if he can court her. Daniel returns to Olivares and William tells him of Nathan's intentions.

Katerina tells Nathan that he's 'basted' and he wonders how she can decide on that too quickly. Daniel reveals to William that Tomas is deep in debt in Manila and he has been lying to them all this time. William refuses to help Tomas but when the latter tells Katerina that he is in big trouble, she helps change their father's mind. William mortgages his land to help pay off Tomas' debts and keep his business afloat. Daniel feels guilty about keeping his relationship with Katerina from William. He confesses and William throws him out of the house for deceiving him.

William tries to drink his problems away and he bumps into Nathan on the way home. He asks the young man to always be on the look out for Katerina's welfare. Katerina pleads to her father to give Daniel a chance, as they have both loved each other since they were children. William changes his mind about making Daniel leave. Instead, he tells Daniel to wait for Katerina to become an adult and if they still love each other when the time comes, he is willing to give them his blessing. William catches Tomas stealing money from his vault and angrily tells him to leave. The incident causes William to have a severe heart attack and dies. Tomas, knowing he is the reason his father passed away, puts the blame on Daniel.

The hacienda mourns for William. The Montenegros give their condolences to Tomas and Katerina. Tomas and Daniel get into another fight and the former forbids the latter from ever entering their home. Tomas leaves his father's wake to pay off his debts using the money from the mortgage. He returns home with his buddies, whom Daniel recognizes as the men who beat him up and took his money in Manila. Genia tries to avoid her sister at the wake but Margaret eventually discovers she lives with the Alcantaras. She also was surprised to know Daniel is Genia's grandson.

Tomas fires Daniel after getting into a fight with his friends. Katerina insists that Daniel stays at the hacienda for he's the only one whom their father trained to run the farm. Marco wonders why Genia chose to disassociate herself from their family and Margaret says her sister's probably up to no good. Emily visits Johanna at home but she was at William's wake. Jane becomes jealous of Marco's interest in Johanna's new friend, Emilia.

William leaves in his will 75% of his wealth to Katerina and 25% to Daniel. Tomas is angry and shocked but the lawyer stated that his father said he has gotten his inheritance a long time ago. After another fight with Daniel, Tomas suspects something is brewing between his sister and their foreman as she seems to defend him all the time. The hacienda however is still losing money as their crops seem to be inferior to nearby farms. To pay the land's mortgage Katerina and Daniel decide to sell some of the things inside the mansion and lay off some of their workers. Marco wants to extend a helping hand to William's family and invites them, Daniel and Genia to a dinner meeting. Margaret isn't very happy about it and is hostile towards his sister the whole time.

Genia encourages Daniel to become friendlier towards Marco as the man might help them with the hacienda. Margaret thinks Genia is a gold-digger and is out to get revenge on her by getting to Marco. Nathan warns Daniel not to become too close to Katerina for he has nothing to offer her. Tomas, encouraged by Margaret, contests William's will in court. Emily still insists on buying the Montenegro property and continues to befriend Johanna.

Daniel and Tomas face off in court. Tomas uses blackmail to make his father's lawyer lie and court, making the court's decision in his favor. Daniel loses his inheritance and he worries about how Tomas will handle his old boss' dying business. Johanna is excited with Emilia's arrival at their hacienda. Emily however gets cold feet and backs out at the last minute. Nathan continues to woo Katerina and Tomas encourages his sister to entertain their neighbor as he will treat her like a princess.

Daniel stays with the hacienda even if Tomas treats him like dirt, as he needs to protect Genia and Katerina. Tomas thinks of ways in making Katerina's suitor Nathan a cash cow for him and his buddies. He tells Nathan to shower his sister with gifts to win her over. Katerina faints due to exhaustion and Daniel tries to revive her. Feeling the attraction once again, Daniel says maybe they should avoid each other so he would not break his promise to her father. Tomas tells Katerina she should marry Nathan to save their hacienda. Daniel does odd jobs around town to raise money for Katerina's graduation dress. He is disappointed though when Nathan beats him to it and throws the brand new outfit he bought in the trash.

Katerina graduates from high school but gets disappointed when her brother and Daniel fail to attend the ceremony. Apparently Tomas was busy putting the blame for the missing 4 million pesos his father loaned from the bank on Daniel. Tomas used the money to pay his debts and he found Daniel as a convenient scapegoat. He had Daniel dragged by horses to teach him a lesson in front of the hacienda's other workers. Emily, who was observing nearby farms, became a witness to this and becomes curious on Daniel. Genia tries to heal Daniel's wounds and becomes regretful why they remain at the Alcantaras. She remembers getting Daniel as a baby after overhearing her sister Margaret tell the jail warden to dispose of Emily and Marco's son in an orphanage. Genia manages to take the baby and raises him as her own. She hopes to reunite him with Marco eventually but now it seems like a bad idea. Marco goes over to the Alcantaras after hearing of what happened to Daniel. He wants to take Daniel to the hospital but the young man refuses, even saying he will still remain and serve at the hacienda.

The police appear at Tomas' home but Daniel denies being maltreated in any way. Genia is disappointed when she learns Marco turned Daniel away. Margaret continues to create war with Genia as she overhears her sister plead Daniel's case. Katerina feels trapped as Tomas continues to insist she stay at the Montenegros. Daniel finds an ally in Johanna, who says she believes he is not a thief. However, he rejects her offer of financial help saying he can't leave the Alcantara's farm.

Katerina finds a way to go home and see Daniel. However, she doesn't find him inside the house or stables. Daniel sneaks in the Montenegro mansion after Genia informs him of Katerina's visit. Daniel explains hiss herself with farm work and to help her, Nathan says she can pretend he is Daniel. Katerina smiles for the first time in days and gives Nathan a hug and this is what Daniel sees. He assumes that Katerina is happy without him and he decides to go with Emily to Italy. Emily arranges to have Daniel's name changed and soon he is in Milan with her. Daniel prays that all will be well with his grandmother and Katerina while he is gone.

Emily schedules a lunch date with Johanna after learning that Marco and Jane adopted the young woman. Johanna divulges some of her father's business dealings and Emily uses the information to 'steal' the Montenegro's prospective clients. Katerina becomes jealous when Johanna discloses Daniel kissed her when they were in Manila. Sensing that Katerina is bothered, Nathaniel tries to cheer her up by taking her shopping. He also surprises Katerina when he asks her to marry him.

Katerina declines Nathan's proposal, saying the only man that she will love is Daniel. She returns to her home as soon as they got back to the Montenegro's hacienda. Johanna tells Daniel that she loves him. She also says Nathan already proposed to Katerina. Daniel does not believe that his girlfriend would say yes, but after hearing Katerina tell Genia about the wonderful gifts she has received from Nathan, he leaves the mansion, not knowing what to do. Tomas, on the other hand, hears his sister say she loves Daniel and would go with him anywhere. He then takes his friends with him to search for Daniel to prevent him from eloping with Katerina. Daniel tries to fight back when they try to beat him up but Tomas stabs him. He is washed away by the current and down the falls and Tomas assumes he is dead. Fortunately, Daniel manages to crawl out of the water and walk down the road, where Emily finds him almost half-dead.

Daniel remained unconscious for weeks but Emily was confident he would pull through. Katerina, Genia and the Montenegros search for Daniel with the help of the authorities but still there was no sign of him in town or in the nearby farms. The police find Daniel's bloodied shirt and after a few weeks, they presume him dead. Tomas rejoices, as no one knows he is the culprit behind the crime. Genia doesn't lose hope though and she feels its time Marco knows the truth. When Katerina continues to reject him, Nathan gets into an angry state that Jane was needed to calm him down. Daniel finally wakes up and Emily encourages him to take revenge on those who did him wrong. She assures him that she will help him every step of the way.

Daniel insists on going home to the farm and Emily lets him go. Katerina busies herself with farm work and to help her, Nathan says she can pretend he is Daniel. Katerina smiles for the first time in days and gives Nathan a hug and this is what Daniel sees. He assumes that Katerina is happy without him and he decides to go with Emily to Italy. Emily arranges to have Daniel's name changed and soon he is in Milan with her. Daniel prays that all will be well with his grandmother and Katerina while he is gone

Nathan continues to strike a deal with Tomas regarding Katerina and the money he will be loaning him. Emily relates to Daniel how she struggled when she first came to Italy and how her kindhearted boss Marcelo, became her husband. Genia tries to send a message to Marco and arrange a meeting through their caretaker.

Margaret sees Genia's note and says her sister is making trouble once again. Marco tells the caretaker he will meet with his aunt soon, after arranging the family's move to Manila. Emily begins training Daniel to care for her farm. He insists on going back to Olivares but Emily says he has to equip himself with the right tools to fight back home. Tomas and Katerina also move to Manila, the former following Nathan's wishes. Tomas continues to waste Nathan's money at the gambling tables and starts to woo Johanna. Genia finally meets with Marco and reveals to him that Daniel is his son.

Genia reveals that Marco had a son with Emily and he has difficulty believing this. Katerina keeps on thinking about Daniel and even tries to reenact what his death felt like by plunging in the club house pool. Nathan saves Katerina thinking she is trying to kill herself. Marco confronts his mother about Genia's revelation and Margaret says her sister is up to no good and he shouldn't be entertaining these thoughts. Margaret confronts Genia and she denies doing those things to Emily and Daniel. Nathan asks Katerina to give him a chance to love her. Daniel browses pictures of Katerina online and hopes she is still wearing his ring. Johanna coincidentally mentions Katerina's ring to her parents and Marco is surprised to see the girl wearing the ring he gave to Emily. He also gets another shock when he bumps into Emily outside his newly opened bar.

Marco could not help but ask Emily about their son but she denies even being pregnant. The pain of losing her child prompts Emily into blackmailing Marco and Jane about Johanna's real identity. Daniel sends money he earns from the vineyards to his grandmother through a bank account he opened in her name. Genia however is puzzled where the money came from. Katerina begins her part-time job as a waitress and she doesn't appreciate Nathan's over generosity because she feels like a charity case. Emily gets drunk in front of Daniel and shares with him how she misses her father and her baby.

Genia tries to return the money to Marco, thinking he was the one who opened the account for her. Marco denies any knowledge of this and Genia immediately thinks of Daniel as her secret benefactor. Emily sends another mystery letter to Marco about Johanna during the opening of their wine bar. She also intensifies her plan to destroy his business by stealing another one of the Montenegro's clients. Daniel begins calling Emily 'Mama' and the two become closer together. Nathan tries to become distant towards Katerina as advised by Tomas, for her to start missing his company.

Katerina asks for 3 signs to make sure Nathan is really the one for her. Coincidentally Nathan was able to do 2 out of the 3 and the last sign that would make Katerina say yes is if he proposes to her in the rain, just like one of her special memories with Daniel. In Milan, Marcelo's son wants to contest his father's will after Emily refuses to give him half of the land. Emily is also intent on training Daniel to be a wine connoisseur as he will be the one to run the wine bar in Manila. Katerina and Johanna fight over Daniel's ring and Marco steps in to stop them.

Tomas tricks Katerina into signing a power of attorney that gives him the right to do whatever he wants with their farm. Nathan announces to his family that he wants to propose marriage to Katerina. Johanna could not stop from commenting negatively on this and Nathan starts to show signs of his uncontrollable anger spells. Marco wants to take Nathan to a doctor once again but Jane says she doesn't want to lose another child again. During Nathan's proposal, the sprinklers at the garden turn on creating the ambiance of a mild summer shower, making Katerina realize all the signs she's asking for were answered. She agrees to marry him. Nathan thanks Tomas for letting him now about Katerina's conditions in letting him into her heart. Daniel, meanwhile, is arrested by Milan authorities for getting into an altercation with Rinaldi, Emily's stepson.
