The player character, Edward, is killed upon being jumpscared by a ghost.
Similarly to its 2 prequels, Mario is seen headless.
When looking at him from the sides, you can see Yoshi's cheeks have been split open, revealing blood and teeth.
Judging by the fact blood is dribbling from Waliuigi's mouth, one could assume he eats his victims.

If the player chooses to hide in the bathroom on night 2, they are forced to take pills that make them appear dead to the ghosts should they appear outside the door.
These pills' effects carry onto night 3 if the player chooses to hide in bedroom 2. Sometimes when lowering the camera pad, a familiar face will jumpscare the player should they not act fast enough in pulling up the camera pad again.

Jumpscares in this game are more common and fleshed out than in the previous 2 games.
Some people who grew up with the Super Mario franchise may find this game difficult to play.
If the player hides in the Dining Room (known as Living Room 3) on night 4, should a ghost enter the room, they will stare at the player for roughly 10 seconds before either the clock rings or they jumpscare the player. This is majorly disturbing considering the fact that the only 2 ghosts that appear in this room have soulless eyes.
If the camera runs out of battery, the player is forced to wait for them to recharge before they can reopen them again. Depending on your situation, this could spell your fate.
Some of the rooms have more threatening aesthetics than others, especially the kitchen which is pitch black unless the player turns on the oven, illuminating it for a brief moment.
There are several rooms where the ghosts can be standing in the same room as the player but chooses to stare before attacking. Very intimidating.
VIRUS Wario makes an appearance in the cross game quest. He is horrifying.
The playroom's music box is very unsettling.
