Four teenagers: Spencer Gilpin (Alex Wolff) a ugly overcautious hypochondriac and video game addict. Anthony "Fridge" Johnson (Ser'Darius Blain) a selfish bully and football player. Bethany Walker (Madison Iseman) a drop dead gorgeous, self-centered fitness fanatic and Martha Kaply (Morgan Turner) a judgemental and insecure bookworm are in detention at Brantford High School for their wrongdoings which they discover a mysterious unknown RPG game called "Jumanji" and they decide to play the game. Without warning, they are magically transported into the game and find themselves in the game's jungle environment in the bodies of their chosen characters: Spencer is Smoulder Bravestone (Dwayne Johnson), an heroic muscular archaeologist. Fridge is Mouse Finbar (Kevin Hart), Bravestone's weapons valet and sidekick. Bethany is Shelly Oberon (Jack Black), a chubby and unattractive paleontologist and Martha is Ruby Roundhouse (Karen Gillan), a beautiful and deadly martial artist. In the game, Spencer, Fridge, Bethany and Martha learn from the jungle guide Nigel Billingsley (Rhys Darby) that Russell Van Pelt (Bobby Cannavale) a corrupt archaeologist has stolen a magic jewel from a jaguar shaped mountain called the Jaguar Shrine and has been consumed by it's dark power which he has the power to control all the animals and creatures in the jungle as part of Van Pelt's mad lust for power as he plots to rule Jumanji. As Nigel also reveals that he retrieved the jewel. Spencer, Fridge, Bethany and Martha also learn Nigel hired them and enlists their help to return the jewel to the Jaguar Shrine and save Jumanji from Van Pelt and that if they want to leave Jumanji and return to the real world, they must complete their quest. Learning what is at stake, Spencer, Fridge, Bethany and Martha set off across Jumanji to return the jewel to the Jaguar Shrine. As they are pursued by Van Pelt and his army of mercenaries whom are bent on retrieving the jewel and preventing them from reaching the Jaguar Shrine, Spencer, Fridge, Bethany and Martha are soon aided in their quest by the helicopter pilot Seaplane McDonough (Nick Jonas) only to discover that he is Alex Vreeke (Mason Guccione) a teenager whom mysteriously vanished 20 years earlier and that he has been trapped in Jumanji and it becomes an adventure Spencer, Fridge, Bethany and Martha will never forget.
