A mother in despair is swept up into the exhilarating world of crime as she swings between trying to get her daughter back from social services and building a daring, thriving career as a jewel thief.

Joan starts really well, Sophie Turner portraying the desperate titular character with real chops and creating the perfect set up for a desperate woman driven to crime for the sake of her daughter. Unfortunately, after the first episode Joan gets hopelessly stuck in the mud and in the end outstays it&#39;s welcome in spite of some solid performances (apart from social services officer and the child actor playing Kelly, who is sadly a very weak link). Joan becomes increasingly dislikable and whiny, drivelling on endlessly about her daughter as though she has to constantly remind the audience why she&#39;s being such an insufferable crook. Yeah, we got it in episode 1, thanks. The 1980s setting is for the most part very believable, but like most of the characters around Joan, it&#39;s oddly shallow. Worst of all, the heist scenes are strangely flat and unexciting - not great for a show about a thief. The denouement is also cringeworthy and highly problematic - Joan is completely unapologetic about the terrible choices she&#39;s made, blaming &quot;men&quot; for her situation instead of taking any accountability for messing up her kid, costing a good man his life and being really rather unpleasant to everyone. By taking this odd and very rushed approach in the final scenes, any sympathy for Joan is lost, there is no redemption story, and you just end up asking yourself &quot;what was the point of all that?&quot;

No one to cheer for! They were mean, dishonest and selfish. Joan&#39;s sister&#39;s hair salon did not look 1980&#39;s and the hairstyles didn&#39;t either. Joan&#39;s blonde hair with black roots would not have been considered stylish back then and her sister&#39;s hairstyle was very 2024. I could not watch past a few episodes as these discrepancies bug me too much. The child was cute, but if her mother was that devoted she could have stayed out of trouble. Nothing noble about the Joan character. I have seen so many good British series based on a true story that were much better presented and more realistic. Hard pass on this one.

In the first episode, I really felt sorry for Joan and her daughter. As a mom, I thought it would be hard for me to continue watching a show where a mother has to give up her daughter. I started to like Boisie, I really did feel that he loved Joan but I felt nothing from her. She just kept using him to get what she wants and never actually thought of him. Every time she brought up her daughter, it was more for selfish reasons. She never truly tried to did anything for her. All the show did was prove that her daughter was better off without her and that she continued to make a horrible decision after the next. There was no character growth whatsoever and even after losing everything, Joan proved that she wouldn&#39;t change. 6 episodes was also too long to portray this story. I know my review mainly discusses the character because other than that, the show didn&#39;t do much. For me to enjoy a show, I have to at least root for the character or storyline, and this show did neither. Disappointing show with an even worse ending.
