The Rule of Three is a recognition that humans tend to seek patterns around them. Since three is the smallest number that can be called a pattern it's considered to be very powerful psychologically. Accordingly, using triads (groups of three) in art and communication is a technique for effectively reach an audience.
The boat featured in the episode is named The Walrus. This is also the name of the pirate ship that Toby Stephens had in Black Sails.
