    It's mostly just an alias. Another reason is the fact that the role was originally meant for a male character, however, the network wanted the show to cast Susan Blommaert. In Season 4, we later learn that she had a wife who was murdered at gunpoint. The gunman who asked her wife for her name, who responded by saying she was Annie Kaplan, then he asked Kate if she was Mr. Kaplan.
