When Desmond teaches Ruth how to use his revolver, he instructs her using a two handed technique. This is good practice by modern standards. However, Desmond learned to shoot in the RAF during World War II, and at this time all pistol shooting was taught using one hand only. The modern two handed technique only began to be developed in the 1950s, and did not become common until later.
