And the award for good timing goes to Netflix. In the wake of Oppenheimer’s inevitable Oscar coronation Sunday night, a celebration of a movie about the tormented father of the atomic bomb and the world he helped create, the mega-streamer has dropped Turning Point: The Bomb and the Cold War, which includes an extensive account of the events leading up to the Manhattan Project, the atomic testing at Los Alamos, the annihilation of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and the arms race that defined the second half of the Twentieth Century.

Oppenheimer showcases Einstein's impact, while Einstein and the Bomb delves into his moral complexities. Einstein served as a crucial moral compass for Oppenheimer, his letter to President Roosevelt a pivotal moment in history. Einstein and the Bomb reveals how Einstein's theories led to atomic weapon development, grappling with consequences.
Within the three-hour runtime of director Christopher Nolan’s award-winning 2023 biographical epic called Oppenheimer, the audience not only learns all about the intricate makeup of the man who was deemed the father of the atomic bomb, J. Robert Oppenheimer, but also the psychological torment that comes with building such a disastrous power and all those that entered his social circle during this exhilarating but devastating time.
With the iconic yet infamous physicist being brought to life in the film by Irish actor Cillian Murphy, in one of his best performances, other real-life names are portrayed like the main character’s wife Katherine “Kitty” Oppenheimer,...

“Wonka” (Warner Bros.) achieved something that the much bigger “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” didn’t. With the #1 spot again this week on VOD top 10s of iTunes, Google Play, and Vudu, it becomes the first film to do this since “Avatar: The Way of Water” last year.
It didn’t come without a challenge. “The Iron Claw” (A24), like the Roald Dahl-inspired musical priced at $19.99 (though to buy; “Wonka” remains rental only) when released on Tuesday, held the #1 spot at iTunes for five days before dropping down. It’s #2 as well at Vudu, with the always lagging Google Play showing it at #5.
Netflix saw a similarly close battle, with the original rom-com “Players” debuting on Valentine’s Day leading leading their top 10 for four days until Eli Roth’s “Thanksgiving,” the latest Sony release to initially stream on the platform, debuted. The Gina Rodriguez/Damon Wayans Jr. film was directed by Trish Sie.

Einstein and the Bomb delves deeper into Albert Einstein's role in the Manhattan Project and highlights the impact of the project's success on him. The documentary showcases the Nazis' hatred towards Einstein and the race to develop the atomic bomb, adding compelling drama. Einstein's regret about helping to construct the weapon of mass destruction is addressed, providing context and recontextualizing his character.
While Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer brilliantly depicts the events leading up to the construction of the atomic bomb, Netflix's newest WWII documentary, Einstein and the Bomb, offers more for audiences wanting to learn about the period. Einstein and the Bomb combines archival footage with dramatizations of the key moments that led to the successful construction of the atomic bomb. Oppenheimer balances the personal life of J. Robert Oppenheimer and the stress surrounding the completion of his mission before the Nazis. In doing so, it minimizes another key figure of the time.

Aidan McArdle plays Albert Einstein in the Netflix documentary "Einstein and the Bomb," embodying the role based on real-life quotes and writings. What, exactly, was Albert Einstein’s involvement in the creation of the atomic bomb — and how did the world’s most famous physicist grapple with the morality of that work? The existential threat posed by nuclear weapons has resurfaced in popular culture in large part due to Christopher Nolan’s Oscar-nominated Oppenheimer, in which Einstein (played by Tom Conti) is depicted advising J. Robert Oppenheimer, the physicist who played a pivotal role in the development of atomic weapons.
In reality Oppenheimer and Einstein likely only met a few times — their relationship has been described as “cordial and complicated” — and, ultimately, Einstein’s contributions to Oppenheimer’s work were theoretical and indirect. However, the foundation of Einstein’s work undeniably influenced all scientists’ understanding of physics moving forward, and those foundations are explored in Einstein and the Bomb, a new docudrama from director Anthony Philipson. Anyone who saw Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer likely noticed Albert Einstein’s involvement in developing the atomic bomb. However, it’s unlikely that he ever interacted with the father of the atomic bomb. That isn’t to say he didn’t influence the development of the atomic bomb at all though. In fact, Einstein rubbed elbows with some of the most infamous leaders in history and certainly felt remorse for any participation he had with the bomb at all. Nonetheless, director Anthony Philipson captured the story in the upcoming docudrama, Einstein and the Bomb.
