When I stumbled upon this 2023 comedy movie titled "Donna and Ally" here in 2025, I had never heard about it. But I have to say that the movie's synopsis sounded interesting enough for me to check out the movie.
The storyline, as written by Cousin Shy, was falling somewhat short of properly entertaining me. Sure, the movie was watchable, but it wasn't a particularly good movie. And as for it being a comedy? Well, I wasn't brought to a single laugh throughout the course of the 87 minutes that the movie ran for.
Needless to say that I was not familiar with the actresses or actors on the cast list. It wasn't top notch acting performances, but the actors and actresses did alright for the kind of movie that "Donna and Ally" turned out to be. Qing Qi, playing Ally, and Cousin Shy, playing Donna, carried the move well enough.
The music in the movie was pretty terrible, and it was just taking away enjoyment from the movie. Yeah, I am definitely not a fan of that kind of lyrics or music.
Would I recommend you to sit down and watch "Donna and Ally" if you enjoy comedies? No, not even remotely.
My rating of director Connor Mahony's 2023 movie "Donna and Ally" lands on a generous four out of ten stars.

No one starts a movie hoping it to bomb, I most certainly don't. And I don't have any issues with low budget or no budget stuff, there are many gems out there, made by people who aren't well connected nepo babies. So I'm very sad to admit that I found this to be an absolute waste of time. No jokes, no personality. Feels like your unfunny friends trying to set up a story that doesn't go anywhere. There are infinite amount of people on YouTube, tiktok, even on Instagram reels who has some charisma or personality. Spending an hour and a half brainlessly scrolling through tiktok will be a significantly more enjoyable experience than watching through this movie.

This film is a total gem in the indie scene, mixing real-life issues with comedy in a way that's both funny and touching.
First off, the world of Donna and Ally is super immersive. You feel like you're right there with them in their underclass neighborhood, experiencing their highs and lows. It's not just about the setting, though; it's about how real it all feels.
Now, let's talk about the stars of the show: Cousin Shy and Qing Qi. These two are incredible as Donna and Ally. They bring so much life and energy to their roles, you can't help but root for them. Their chemistry is off the charts, making every scene they're in together a blast to watch.
The film doesn't shy away from tough topics like PMDD and sex work, but it handles them with a mix of seriousness and humor that's really refreshing. It's not often you see a film that can make you laugh while also making you think.
And the dialogue? Spot on. It's witty, it's sharp, and it feels like real people talking. You'll find yourself laughing one minute and getting hit in the feels the next.
Honestly, "Donna and Ally" has so much going for it, I'd love to see it turned into a series. There's just too much good stuff here to be contained in one film. More adventures with Donna and Ally? Yes, please!
In short, "Donna and Ally" is a fantastic watch. It's fun, it's heartfelt, and it showcases some serious talent on and off the screen. Definitely check it out if you're looking for something that's both entertaining and meaningful.
